78 alumni cast member here. long before the casting building and long before "Traditions". when casing was several mobile homes connected together across from the cast members parking lot, (old joke for cast member you did not want to park in "B,F, and,E " isles of the parking lot, very long walk. lol those know what i mean :) ) next to the parking lot of the now "traditions" building. lol. when Lake Buena Vista was still called that. and it was just the Magic Kingdom. but even then they did have a fore runner to the now traditions and it was an all day event. however then lunch was on the house. a one time thing. the dress code was pushed into our heads for good reasons and why you are called cast members and not "employees". for as "cast members" you are always on stage and represent the company at all times. even after leaving it boils my insides when i would conduct interviews with new hires that a lot would not dress for the "part" interview. and seeing women with 5 inch finger nails (real or fake) wanting to get a job as a cashier or work in food. (yuck), ( you know how much contamination and bacteria are under those nails. let a lone how slow people are trying to manipulate coins or keys on a keyboard with long finger nails.) but i understand why the Mouse has those restrictions. and i found my self using and implementing sanitation food standards that i learned from the Mouse. it was suprising to me to work for other well known companies that what i call basic sanitation standards (that i learned from the Mouse) where not even known to most of my bosses let alone the employees. when i did, health inspection numbers (violations) went down. so in a way Walt's vision of his "EPCOT" lived on. like any job it was fun at times, hard at others, boring as well, (you got time to lean, you got time to clean). it had its good days, bad days. others times not seeing eye to eye on some changes made by the suits. and then people being human you dont get along with everyone conflicts of personalities arise, and you deal with it. but to make up for those not so good times. just by luck getting some over time to help clean up after construction, and seeing them test and light up Space ship earth for the first time from the American pavilion across the lake at night. what a sight that was awe inspiring and a found memory knowing what just happened that i was one of the few to see it. no music loop playing, just the quiet sounds of a late night in central Florida. as the lights where turned on to that Geodesic sphere and all the reflections in the still waters of the lake was lol as they say magical.

I'm in Detroit but I have no strings attached I could go virtually anywhere, but hearing about this company I realize how much of an asset I could be to Disney in safety. I did corporate safety for UPS drivers for years. I totally understand the gung-ho, super enthusiastic about the company, get excited thing-that was literally my job. I was that strange company character until one-by-one I slowly converted every last person to drinking the punch. But although some people at the company might see me as brainwashed by company-material or whatever I can totally see how Disney would say hell yeah this is exactly the type of person we want in our immersive environment. Not to mention the years of protocols, inspections and dealing with OSHA leading company training and all of that stuff. Maybe I should reach out. I'm even reminded right now of the time at the company party I even volunteered to put on the gorilla suit and entertain the kids for a while in 93 degree weather haha although that was a different company

At that point, I'm a year and half from early retirement, so I might as well stick it out before I move down and start working for The Mouse. I have a very long story about why I want to do that, but it's better told in person. I do know that I've met a few cast members (most are still there), with whom I have shared my story. Nearly every single one says that I need to come work there, that more people like me are needed. PS. I never took Spanish, but those are the only words I know too...

I know it used to be more than 1 day, I want to say 2 or 3, but I want to say that it was even further back than what they said. Additionally, a lot of what would have been covered in those multi-day Traditions is now covered in your park or department training. It hasn't actually been lost, just done in a different place. And it means that they've been able to cut it down some (read saved $$) by eliminating some of the training for people that didn't need to know it.

SirWillow That makes sense, and is kind of what I would think. They did also say that Traditions is now only like 4 hours long...but I don’t know. Interesting side note, the former CFO where I work, was in upper management in the accounting department at WDW, I’m guessing in the 80s or 90s. He said the counted the cash by weighing it. They would enter the bill denomination, the temperature and the humidity and put the pallet on the scale and it would spit out the total.

Schedules for those kinds of things will change and vary over the years as they adjust what they do in them, so it's hard for me to say for sure. Wow! I'm thinking about becoming a cast member one day, but I'd have to do it in the four months I get off from university. Is that sort of thing possible? How long does training take before you get to be on stage (i.e. do you do anything else besides Traditions)? When you were talking about conflicts of interest, would a vlogging channel that covers visits to theme parks be detrimental in any way? Loving your videos and stories as usual, SirWillow!
@SirWillow
5 жыл бұрын
Generally Disney isn't going to hire you for just 2-4 months of work. Not when it takes almost a month to get through the whole entire process of hiring, interviewing, background checks, and training. However, they do have a "seasonal" status that might work for you, and would allow you to work short term like that. but you have to pick up extra shifts- you aren't scheduled (unless that has changed) and it has to be when they are really in need of workers. But check with Disney casting and see if that's happening. It is possible that the vlogging channel could create a conflict of interest, especially depending on if you deal with Disney and if so in what ways. There are some CP's that do a little bit of vlogging though. Again, it would be something that I would check with Disney itself. If they are ok, though, there are definitely some things they aren't going to let you vlog at risk of your job.

So.... Are all Disney Employees "Cast Member's" or just the positions inside the parks (employees that interact with guest) What about behind the scenes staff working in an office off site etc? On that note what about name tags? How high up do you have to go before the office staff isn't wearing name tags? I would imagine there are engineers off site that aren't referred to as "cast member's" or wearing name tags but then again it is Disney. Do "ALL" new employees go through the same set up as far as traditions or is that part handled a different way when on boarding new hires like in house counsel, Engineers, Architects etc?
@SirWillow
5 жыл бұрын
EVERY Disney employee is a cast member. Doesn't matter the position, they're all cast members and all go through traditions. They also ALL have name tags with their first names. I'm sure there are some positions in offices where they don't wear them all the time, but they should have them, and if they are in any sort of official capacity in the parks, they'll have them on. Also every single one should go through Traditions. The version may vary a bit depending on where they are working, but they'll get it. Just top of my head, that might not be true for movie crews, but then again it might. But if they are a Walt Disney employee they'll have it.

A little bit OT but I have an idea that I really likes and have try to drop of with theatre folks and LEGO groups but without success. I come so far that the LEGO guyes told me that everything entertaining with theyre brand such as LEGO Star Wars Movie was done by others and I got to think of Disney Theatre group for this idea - But again someone at Disney told me they never pick up Unsolidicated ideas ever so I am kinda stuck. I think its a neat idea and everyone I talked to about it has agreed. My question is if its possible that you knows anyone who knows anyone whom might be in the position to take a look about this idea - Either at Disney theatres/entertainment or LEGO or simular theatre producers? Johan.
@SirWillow
5 жыл бұрын
I don't, unfortunately. And even if I did, I doubt that they would. The reason that Disney doesn't take submissions is that they don't want to have to deal with any claims later on for royalties or payments if they use an idea and it becomes hugely successful. So they only accept ideas from people working inside already, and all of those are immediately the property of Disney.
@JohanMsWorld
5 жыл бұрын
@@SirWillow I can understand the reasons to why it is so but it is really troublesome for us who are creative but have little contacts in the creative world. I am not in the buisness for bragging but I do have severel ideas whom I might think will be of benefit for Disney if I got a chance to file them. I am not picky on the ownership thing and could easy accept a "carte del blanche" contract where Disney or any other are free to use them as long as I am credited for bringing the idea and got a small percentage of the income. I would even be happy to work for Disney with idea development and other creative work - I love to come up with creative ideas and have a harddrive full of them. Johan.
@SirWillow
5 жыл бұрын
@@JohanMsWorld But that's the problem. They don't want to share credit or the income. Plus it opens up a huge can of worms if more than one person submits similar ideas, or if they use several ideas- who gets the credit, who gets the payment? All things that Disney doesn't want to deal with, especially after other over the years have tried to sue Disney over claims like that (I believe Disney has won just about all of those lawsuits as well)

This is so interesting! I have to ask--I have a non-visibly obvious disability that makes it so I can't stand or be on my feet for long periods of time without being in excruciating pain. Last time I was at Disney World I got a DAS pass for this and was very surprised and kind of uncomfortable when the cast member DIDN'T ask me what was wrong with me lol I felt like I must look like I'm just abusing the system. Does Disney have a policy on how to handle guests with non-visible disabilities? I would also love to know if they have protocols for guests with severe anxiety disorders. I'm planning a trip for 2020 for my best friend and me and we'd love it if she could get a wrist band or something so the cast members and characters know she isn't being rude or unenthused if she gets anxious or panics during interactions. Thank you!
@SirWillow

They aren't allowed to ask wahtva persons disability is. And there are many that aren't visible so dont feel you were taking advantage when you had a need. i didn't know how much goes into becoming a cast member, wow! as a quote on quote disabled disney world guest had been visiting since i was little turned now young woman. on my last trip to disney world which was just back in december 2016; my loved and i were having a absolutely wonderful time; on the ride at the mexico pavilion in epcot park, i was chewed out big time especially in front of my loved by one of the rides cast members for wearing my little backpack on my shoulders while i was in my wheelchair "on" the vehicle; one of my loved ones stepped in even though i could've taken care of it myself by giving my explaination the fact am old enough to step it up to the plate but it didn't happen that way; so the cast member aggressively got verbally abusive to the point threatened to me in front of my loved ones the fact if i didn't take off my backpack that was on my shoulders she would call security, have them take me off the vehicle, then have me taken physically out of this park; one of my loved ones stepped in then tried to explain the fact that i was already putting weight on the vehicle by being in my wheelchair, her backpack doesn't have much stuff in it, besides it completely securely closed. i was completely utterly embarrassed especially the fact i've been on the mexico ride before with no problem. then she mentions to the same loved one i was with by asking them "why does she have her backpack with her anyways, she's not suppose to?!" the loved one that i was with trying to defend me, my daughter has brought her backpack before with no problem then she mentions to the cast member what i usually have in my backpack. good thing is she still let me and my loved ones still ride then out of the clear blue; i on the other hand look over watching this other cast member at the ride come up to the one that was chewing me out for no apparent reason comes up to her says to her right in front of her "just let it go, if she says she's brought it on before with her then let it go, we have no specific rules for backpacks on the ride". after all that drama was going on, we all moved on with no other drama being pulled thank goodness. : ). luckily the other cast member apologized to the loved one that stood up for me even though i could've done it the fact like i said am old enough to have stood up for myself. i got to thinking after all that drama while i was riding on the boat enjoying myself and the ride; i thought to myself "someone must have a lot of crabby pattys in their life" lol! so glad to this day that situation didn't go from bad to worse thank goodness : ). keep those awesome videos coming sir : ).

Wow what a ridiculous situation. Over a backpack? I'm wondering what had happened to them to cause such a reaction. I would have reported them to guest relations as they were way out of line. Happy to hear the other cast member at least apologized.

@@SirWillow my loved ones and i were wondering the same thing for that particular cast member to have caused such a ruckus. it even gets worse the fact i'm stating a fact; the group of people that were in the vehicle in front of ours watched in disbelief as this was unfolding, it was utterly to the extreme embarrassing as i quickly noticed and remained calm at the same time. i'm about to leave at the end of february going to be there the first week of march; hopefully this trip won't have any of that kind of drama but if it does then at least i'll know to go in the guest relations office to get to the bottom of it if it happens again. anyways, again great video mentioning what goes on up to become a cast member working for the big man himself which i mean the mouse : ). i believe i realize I've always completely respected the rules and regulations and all what not; but that to have happened out of the clear blue; that was extremely embarrassing especially myself being a grown young woman to a grown i'm sure young woman which was the cast member i was dealing with but anyways, hopefully this trip i'm leaving for soon at least will know ahead of time if it happens again will report it myself and will show that grown young woman in me without fear, lol! love your shirt by the way, that made me laugh out loud, lol!

I am very curious about something, you said that safety is very important when it comes to the Walt Disney Company and I respect that, so why did Disney all these years cover up some of these deaths at the Disney parks? I guess it’s not a secret anymore now because of social media but before that why did they cover it up then it looks like Disney doesn’t care.

Traditions? Because Disney has a lot of traditions and they are introducing you to them and making you a part of them.
