They never pay people who do the actual work enough. It's clear from watching your vids even for a week or 2, that you know your systems inside out, know what the fault is likely to be, save your company (unless you own it of course) and the state a TON of money, yet nobody will acknowledge it

My standard response as a UK sparky now, is 'yes, i fixed the problem in 10 mins, the charge was 100 pounds, my college courses and continuing exams to keep up to date with the regs (code) are not free, if you want me to make it an hour, put the kettle on and i'll drink tea for 50 mins'

That's what I hate about our left lane turn lights here in Jacksonville FL. No one in the lane but we all have to wait for those pesky invisibles to go. The only good thing they have done is make the left turn go into an amber blinking caution mode so you can make a left hand turn oncoming traffic permitting.

Never seen those terminal blocks before - since they’re puncturing the insulation with the contact itself, I bet they end up with less added resistance due to oxidation as well compared to a normal spring socket or screw terminal - pretty neat.

IPC/IDC has been standard in data and telecomms for years. Used to be used a lot on festoon lighting at mains (120/240) back in the day too (the construction site harnesses). You could just buy the cable, and holders, and fit the sockets anywhere along the cable
@polypolyman
Ай бұрын
@@TheChipmunk2008 Hmm, I guess I'm just used to seeing IDC in the form of 110/66 blocks, or the ribbon cable type connectors - i.e. something you always have to punch or crimp with a special tool. These being lever-actuated and on a pluggable term block like that is just an impressive advancement of that technology. Wouldn't mind getting some Wago-style nuts with that feature

Hey Traffic Light Doctor! You may be on to something there with the desensitizing of zones. If the problem is only at night though, I believe you can run the desesitize based on time of day... Run it at night, but then run it normally during daylight hours.
@Trafficlightdoctor

@@streetsmartstraffic I’ll have to look into that more! A lot of the issue happens the first hour of sunlight when it’s changing over. Their NEXT system overall has plenty of issues that bother me a lot. Half the time they work great the other half it’s nothing but ongoing issues. With all the extra grounding and storms still take out their equipment all the time they are a maintenance nightmare and I wish they would separate the power and get away from POE.

@@Trafficlightdoctor If you haven't seen it yet, they now have the APEX system. Most of the same features as NEXT but now run a seperate power cable like the old Vantage systems...

@@streetsmartstraffic if it was up to me we wouldn’t use anything but Wavetronix radars when it comes to vehicle detection! Politics and price is what sells these systems and I’m not going to push anything Iteris until I see durability improvements on their equipment. Their TS1 systems set the standard (besides the smartspan great concept and hardware but the state had a lot of complaints after we installed them) and now it seems to be hit or miss on their equipment.

@@Trafficlightdoctor Good to know. I know nothing about Wavetronix other than 20+ yrs ago at one of my previous employers, they did a trial basis on one. Nothing but problems....but that may have been a 1st generation product. Thanks for responding! Keep up the good work! Make Traffic Signals Great Again! @@streetsmartstraffic my guess that would of been a wooden pole intersection you had issues with. But running a separate equipment ground up each pole to ground the radars aswell as put set screws through the mounting bracket into the pole to help with shrinkage on the pole with temp and humidity changes. That would have also been a click 112 system which was known to have its issues but they nailed it with their click 600+ series and I’m hoping their new Arc processor will be as durable.

Seems a bit dangerous to me to have logic on the same block (the order is correct tho,neutral then ground closer to the logic stuff. As a uk sparky, i have a short story... colleague kept getting shocked from RCBOs (combined gfcis and mcbs)... me: you're plugging the thing into the bus first.... that makes the functional earth live at 240 :P

Not related to this video, but the "Push to Cross" buttons on the pedestrian crosswalks, do they do anything or are they just there for feel good reasons? It never seems like anything is different after pushing one of them.
@jovetj
Ай бұрын
They _do_ do something. But pushing a button does not give instant results. The traffic signal controller only cares about buttons that have been pushed at certain times in the cycles. When you push a button, it's remembered up until the time the traffic controller cares about whether a button has been pushed. If one has been pushed, then it follows a slightly-different phase for that cycle. If that makes sense.

Only thing is you can’t physically see what’s going on in the intersection and if something were to happen in an emergency to where you had to react quickly and make a change to something
@MattK_ATC

It all comes down to liability. There is a ridiculous amount of butt covering in the ATC world. There are devices in the cabinet whose only job is to cover everyone's butts in case of an accident. Devices like our wonderful EDI 1600 MMU that are there for only one purpose, insurance. If it ever catches two lights on at the same time that shouldn't be on concurrently it immediately puts the intersection into flash. Someone has to physically be there to take responsibility for assuring the intersection is safe before putting it back into operation. The traffic light industry runs on liability mitigation it seems some days 😅😅
