Trail Tip with Luke Brown - Navigating Parked Vehicles on the Trail 🚗🐴
COMMENT below: In your horse’s opinion, what is the scariest object he or she has ever encountered out on the trail? 😱 What did you do about it?
When you come across a parked vehicle on the trail, if your horse isn’t fully relaxed 🧘♂️ when walking up to and beside it, take time to help him relax to this strange and scary object.
By circling around the vehicle multiple times 🔄, turning towards it to change directions, and circling the other direction, you will slowly but surely help your horse relax to this trail obstacle on both sides of his body.
If you don’t have the ability to walk all the way around the vehicle, do short or stationary serpentines ♾️, focusing on turning toward the vehicle to change directions. Get a hindquarter yield first, followed by a forequarter yield during the turn.
You should continue to work on approaching the vehicle until your horse can walk up to it and stand quietly while relaxed 🧘, and walk past it on the left and right side without swaying or spooking away.
Helping your horse learn to relax to such an object will carry over to being more relaxed to other vehicles and objects as well 🚜. Remember, the more your horse knows and has been exposed to until relaxation, the better educated he is, and the easier and safer the trail ride will be.
What’s the scariest object (in your horse’s opinion) you’ve ever encountered out on the trail? 🧟♂️
