vimeo.com/mana... Rex is a pampered little corgi in the care of Queen Elizabeth who always gets his way. ...And that's pretty much it. Special Quest Writer - Ben Molulon
QUESTION OF THE RIFF: Give Rex a real character arc! He might be the main character but he was no hero. There was no real growth, no big epiphany and no expectation of him becoming a better dog in the future. How would you portray Rex differently and how does the ending of the movie change? Be creative (but brief) and your answer might be one of the ones that Bobsheaux or I read and discuss in a standalone QOTR video which will be posted before the next review or riff comes out. Keep your answers family-friendly, please. NO LINKS and only replies to this comment will be considered. Also, this is not where to request a review/riff or comment on something unrelated. Please use this thread only for replying to the question of the riff and discussing the answers given by others. LIKE AND REPLY TO THE ANSWERS THAT YOU'D MOST LIKE TO HEAR BOBSHEAUX AND RAVEN DISCUSS AND IT MIGHT HELP THAT ANSWER BE ONE OF THE ONES CHOSEN!

Rex should NOT be trying to get back to his cushy lifestyle at Buckingham Palace, all he wants to do is get back to the queen because he's HER dog and he loves her. While at the pound, he sees how miserable every OTHER dog is, he realizes how good he's had it up until now, and he wants to share the love that the queen's been giving HIM, so he resolves to break the other dogs out of the pound so they can have a good home with him as well. Yes it's simple, but at least it's SOMETHING.

I'd give Rex an arc that he still defeats Charlie but still doesn't go back to Buckingham palace and stays at the pound with his friends.

Here's an idea, the Corgis have a secret job of delivering the Queen's (or King's) letters. Rex is next in line to take of the job. But Rex being the pampered pup he is doesn't take the job seriously. One his job, deliver a letter to someone. However he drops it in the mail box. Charlie steals the letter and gives it to his master/owner (who is an evil duke). The letter reveals who will be next to inherit the throne. Rex learns how important the letter is and tries to get it back only to end up in the dog pound. There he realizes how awful he's been and with the other dogs help, escapes steals back the letter from Charlie and his owner, and hands it to the right heir. The movie ends with all the pound dogs getting adopted by the Queen's staff and Rex vowing to be the best royal letter deliver dog ever.

I'd give him the same general "arc" of bonding with pound/stray dogs and learning not to care about his "top dog" status, but give it a proper set up. Before he goes missing, have scenes early on where Rex has to interact with "lesser" dogs and, while he's more innocently insensitive instead of the complete asshole we see in the finished film, there is still a sense that he looks down on and doesn't respect his "subjects". He can be sitting in the palace garden eating one of his fancy meals, and then some starving strays come up to the fence begging him to give them some, but he refuses and the guards shoo the stray dogs away. This not only sets up a conflict when the same strays have to help him later, but it also leads to an ironic echo near the end when Rex returns to Buckingham Palace and is shooed away just as they were.

The producers of this film (Charades) also made I Lost My Body on Netflix, which is a really great film. And also Leap! (Ballerina) and The Little Prince 2016. They also co-produced Mamoru Hosoda’s films The Boy and the Beast, Mirai and Belle.

It reminds me of how Maasaki Yuasa’s Inu-Oh is co-produced by the same producers (Fortissimo Films) as Wong Kar Wai’s films Ashes of Time, Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love and 2046.

considering that Trump is no longer president and that Charles is now King, is it safe to say this movie has aged poorly?

So true, but in it's own right it's still a good movie imo.

I wouldn't use the word "poorly" (outside of the quality of its making, of course), it's just a product of its time. Aging poorly would be, for example, a movie in the mid-90s predicting that Zip disks would be the media of the future. lol

A movie showing an elected official who’s longer in office and/or a famous person who’s passed away doesn’t mean it aged poorly. By that standard any media that mentions someone well known is going to age poorly.

I'm not too sure why this movie even got US dub when all they're doing is just using American actors doing British accents considering the original UK dub actually featured some really well known British actors like Jack Whitehall as the voice of Rex the main antagonist Charlie being Voiced by Matt Lucas Julie Walters playing the queen herself and Ray Winstone playing the Pitbull Tyson it just seems that it would have been a no-brainer to keep the original UK dub

Apparently, the US dub was the original dub. The UK version was the dub.

@@HydraSpectre1138 interesting though the US dub does only feature one actual British voice actress that being Jo Wyatt as Rex's love interest

As bad as this movie is I think I prefer the UK dub because at least Jack Whitehall's voice for Rex sounds more natural than the guy they got to do with voice in the US dub because he can clearly tell he's just an American actor doing a British accent in the American release

I doubt this film would ever get a sequel because of how poorly this film was at the box office and if it did get a sepuel it would just be called the Queen's Corgi 2 the King's Corgi
