A westbound Canadian National train, had a train car that was on fire, as it passed through Elmhurst Illinois on the afternoon of August 10, 2012. I saw the smoking gondola just west of York Street, and later recorded the fire fighting efforts further down the line in Villa Park. The cause of the fire is unknown. It broke out in an open car that was partially filled with old railroad timbers as well as other trash.
The train was halted near Addison Illinois and a large retail parking lot aided in access to the flames. Several area communities responded with firefighters as well as Police. North Avenue (Illinois Route 64) was shut down as was most of the North Avenue/Addison Road intersection. The fire was finally quenched by turning the flaming rail car into a giant bathtub.
