In this final episode of my trip to Denver aboard the California Zephyr, we encounter a flash flood and landslide in the Rockies that causes our train to be delayed for many hours.
The reversing sequence shown is extremely rare. The conductor uses a small device that attaches to the rear air hose and is used to make whistle sounds to signal to the engineer. It requires close communication between the conductor and engineer to safely reverse the train out of danger.
