This insight has occurred to me in the past. But you have taken our mutual insight and elaborated upon it very eloquently. Whenever life gets you down and wearing a frown, the reliable barbell will be there for you. Barbells love us unconditionally.

So true, I am a failure at career, social and dating, but at least I see results at the gym.

Goal oriented vs Process oriented. Studies have shown (what we probably already know/experience) that people are happier, more stable & more positively contributory toward society with the latter approach...It's the journey, my friend; it's the journey... :-)

Sometimes I feel like I lift because it's the only aspect of my life that I can control and that isn't careening into a black pit of despair like the economy, the climate, the geopolitical balance of power, and the ever-present threat of annihilation from hundreds or thousands of threats both real and imagined

yes, true. and beyond: the strength and confidence you can build up, the insight that it is all about cycles that never return to the same point, that you may export from the gym. ceteris paribus, the person with more self-confidence than the other, who will get more out of life? the same insight is known in yoga since thousands of years.

GREAT commentary on the gym as a refuge from an insane, unfair world. Here is the great Henry Rollins: "The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you’re a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there, like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds. -Henry Rollins

You worded much better, what I figured out in high school. The gym was simple, linear,. The real world wasn't.

Mostly just making a silly meme. Founded or unfounded, lots of people feel disillusioned and dispossessed and it’s really alluring to turn to certain ideologies. I’ve gotten into the habit of telling people that no, hard work doesn’t always pay off, but it’s more likely to than NOT hard work.

I can assure you the cause and effect nature of intelligent work extends beyond the gym. Reject Plato, embrace Aristotle.

Perhaps we should neither reject nor embrace either of them _in toto_, but instead learn what we can without being categorical in our judgements?

drawing on the eternal despite between ideas and experience... well, each one is none without the other, and both of them knew that.
