Great work! He's all eyes on you almost the whole time and he's so happy to get those rewards! Those hips and muscles are STRONG he's always on em! Always a pleasure to see a great trainer work. Also, if there is funding in the budget, I have a 'Moment' phone case, it has a setup to allow you to clip various lessons on without any risk of them falling, and they make those lenses and a gimble, so you can turn your phone into a full videography setup for under $500. I only have a moment case and a macro lens for personal hobby stuff but since you're doing this to share your profession I thought you might like to know if you didn't already

Aww Sharon! Don’t let a walker hold you back from training your own dog!! Some adjustments are required (I’ll give you that!) but if you love training that much, train while you sit and go walking with a much smaller dog! A walker isn’t the end of dog ownership 😊

Do you think a focused heel is practical for a service dog? A lot of people debate this. My self trained service dog is focused, but does so by check ins and focus on command. Especially for guide work I feel as though they also need to focus on their surroundings.

I have a Dutch Shepard pup 8 and a half months he is a sweet boy but I can get him to stop running away when the door opens. Or to come to me when I call anymore it's not like he is playing he is honestly purposely being. A brat and not minding it's dangerous because I live in the so CA desert and we have coyotes out here and want him by my side to make sure he is safe. Do you have any suggestions that might help with fixing this new problem

I believe he said to reward heavily in the beginning for recall. Like don't just only give a couple pieces of kibble when they return.
@TheJeffncarolyn
Жыл бұрын
Lots of reward, both praise and excitement from you as well as very tasty treats. At 8 months they are going through a phase also, very common for puppies to have a couple regressions through their first year. Practice recall when you know it will be successful also, and gradually increase. Don't only practice when you need it, and try to practice when you know you can retrieve the pup if needed. If they learn to ignore the command, that's not ideal, so don't keep calling if the pup is ignoring you. Often times if you really need to get pup back, turning and digging a hole like you found something exciting, or getting their attention then running the other way can work to get them back. Background, we raise guide dog puppies.

@@deedeewill thank you I'm going to switch his treats to something better cuz maybe he is bored with them he is such a good dog so loving but I can tell he isn't playing when he disobeys me or does what he wants he runs and then he acts like when I chase him he'll stop he'll wait till I get right to him and he'll run again and it takes me forever to catch him again I'm just afraid because we have the Coyotes out here I don't want him to get away from me like the other night he opened the door while I was sleeping he knows how to open the doors now so now I have to double Lock my doors and if I open the door he shoots out like a barrel and I have to go chase him it's crazy he never did this before it's just a new thing like he said it was a they go through a phase I'm hoping this is just a phase cuz honestly all I have to do is say to call his name and he'll come right to me normally but not for the last 2 weeks last two weeks he's been just doing whatever he wants and I know that's a phase that they do but I don't spank him I won't do that usually I could just talk to him and he's cool but now he just blows me off LOL so maybe it's the treats maybe I need to get in better treats maybe he's bored with them cuz he is bigger now maybe I should just get in better treats

Can you explain how those different ways the dog learns to heel become useful? Like, besides looking cool, what types of scenarios is that used in? Or is it the foundation to shape into something else? Why teach a dog to do that?

@@sm8155 So the dog can be right next to you and move with you (by feel) without needing verbal or visual (looking up at you) commands. eg a chaotic live crime scene, as the K9 operator you've either done your job or are standing by, but more police vehicles / officers on foot are arriving so you want to withdraw 10 metres, you need your dog to precisely come with you so they don't get in the way / run over. You don't want them looking up at you as they need to be looking out for danger, and it might be too loud environment (sirens) for verbal commands. Contact heel also means they know they're working and are not to stop and sniff etc, they are to focus. My dog is not a K9 but I use it as she knows pressing up against me is her safe place, so if she feels threatened by another dog, loud noises etc, we can keep moving and i'm right next to her.
