This movie is so iconic & nobody else could've played the villain any better. Gotta give props to Ethan Hawke too for being the one to be the opposing force to Denzel, plus all the great cameos. After watching this movie, definitely need to watch/react to American Gangster if you haven't seen it already. Another great role where he plays the villain & his acting range is insane in that movie

Denzel's performance is of such a high tier that it distracts everyone from a brilliant performance by Ethan Hawke, who is actually the protagonist. Without a performance as strong as his bouncing off Denzel's then this film wouldn't have worked half as well. He's also brilliant in Gattaca, if you've not seen it.

Antoine Fuqua (the director) confirmed he’s making a prequel. It’s still about Alonso Harris (Denzel’s character) the day after the Rodney King trial. If you also didn’t know, Alonzo is based off Rafael Perez, the corrupt detective who ran with Suge Knight and Death Row. This is definitely one of my favorite movies. I can quote this movie word for word haha. Great vid and stay blessed fam! ✊🏽🙏🏽❤️💯

In my honest opinion, this is one of Denzel's best acting roles (yeah, Man on fire was excellent as well) the pretrial of a rogue detective living on the fringe and skirting his duties as an officer was real edgy from the jump. It was convincing and the streets were so real with all star cameos with the extras they brought in made this movie a great movie. Denzel Washington brought it home and threw it in your face.

There are so many great Denzel Washington roles. I would suggest three, one from his earlier in his career, one more towards the middle, and one much more recent: Glory (for which he won an freakin Oscar), Philadelphia (where he has an incredibly subtly-acted revelation and profound change of heart) and The Equalizer (where plays an updated version of a highly memorable 1980’s t.v. character, originally played by the great British actor Edward Woodward - and Washington makes an impression you’ll never forget.) The best thing is, he won an Oscar when he was young - from Glory, and very well deserved - but he’s only gotten better and better. The performance he give in The Equalizer is so good in so many ways…

Truthfully, I think that Alonzo came in the game really green like Jake, but through the years he saw an awful lot that changed him. I think he sees himself in Jake, his raw potential, so he wants to mold Jake. If Jake won’t bend Alonzo’s contingency is to frame him. Hence making him smoke that laced weed, and blaming him for shooting Roger, or just let the vatos kill him. Denzel was a beast in this role! He’s a beast in every role he plays, but this one definitely goes against the grain compared to his others. He’s awesome!

He is from South Side Huntington Beach in Orange county, originally he grew up in LA until he became homeless and spent time in Huntington beach where they offered him food and a place to sleep, he then would eventually joing the gang for supporting him. Today hes a cool guy past his gang banging lifestyle and does alot of work with communities

I have seen the movie dozens of times and every time is as entertaining as watching it for the first time. on the topic if he was justifiable, he had a point on some moments like it takes a wolf to catch a wolf. But first he had actually to be a good person but just being able to be rough and do what is necessary to accomplish the goal for the benefit of everyone. But he was a villain and took advantage of his position for personal gain.

I hope you realized by now, that after Ethan Hawke didn't take that money he was a deadman, well actually after not claiming Rogers body in front of the other officers. Watch it again, you missed a lot. Roger was a Plug, and Denzel stayed close to get the drop(Arrest). But the open thing you got right is he(Alonzo) stayed in some mess. Your like "All Man he left Him with the Vito's"😂. That was the plan bro, when Alonzo got in the car he called the Vito's and ordered the Hit.("Make sure the tub is clean"). in the box was the payment, the girl pulls it out when they come in. And Jake carried His own price in the door. That why bro said it was just business.

I feel like Denzel’s Character was the embodiment of the African American who has reluctantly ended up growing up as someone who sees the police as the ultimate authority & also that nothing matters cause even tho he himself is technically a “detective” he still lives in poor conditions. So he does whatever he wants cause he already knows the game of life especially in America, is rigged no matter one’s own moral belief or approach on any given situation. Take the money. Cool. Don’t take the money. Cool. Game still rigged against you either way. is what I believe Denzel to be saying throughout this movie. Without actually verbalizing it blatantly.
