We showed last year but had a couple of bumps in the road. When I was mounting Tyrus to go to the dressage court, the guys cleaning his corral made a loud noise just as I was swinging my leg up and I ended up sitting behind the saddle on a startled and wildly piaffing Tyrus (that is his go-to reaction when he gets upset, bolt, piaffe or both). I stayed on, settled him down and after warm-up, we rode the first test (this one) without issue.
The second test went badly in my opinion, and I need to add an explanation before putting it up on KZitem. (Rider error of course.)
We are scheduled to show again March 5, 2023 and we are much better prepared this time. Keep your fingers crossed it doesn't rain that day! We scored low 60s on this test and an abysmal high 50s on the second test at this November 2022 show. I expect to do better in March. We will be riding Training Level Tests 1 and 3 then.
We have been working with a stellar trainer Jane Guzman for the past 8 months, I ride and work on his training daily and we have been making good steady progress.
I got a PIVO and hope to be able to post some of our exercises to increase his straightness. That has been the primary training objective for at least the past 6 months. We had to take a couple of steps back to get one step forward correctly. (That is how Tyrus can do beautiful counter canters, but not consistently carry himself properly on his regular leads, ugh! I did a lot of work with him on counter canters the previous year before connecting with Jane my trainer.) I am currently getting his basics better before moving on to the more advanced movements at this time. We are currently working on extending his gaits, while maintaining consistency in his straightness, tempo and impulsion. Putting him more consistently on the bit is another goal, as well. I do not use artificial aides to make him hold his head down, I want to get the proper head carriage through his hind end and self-carriage (balance). I feel we are slowly getting closer. I am personally working on my own straightness, my posture and other aides, so I can influence Tyrus primarily with my weight and legs more than with the reins. He continues to be the bestest sweet boy, accepting of his training and tries very hard to please.
