Guys I know use zip ties to hold the bait on the lure. The way it was explained to me is that when she has the game down you throw her the lure with fresh meat readily available- she will leave the game for the lure because it is easier to eat the lure meat then to start ripping into the game. Then while she is focused on the lure meat you grab the dead rabbit. I cant imagine hunting rabbits without dogs - you need to bust them out. Great video series you are doing I really appreciate it. I cant imagine how much commitment is involved to do this

So much to like here. I especially like that you resist the urge to grab the jesses every time the bird flies to your fist. As long as you continue this, she will not feel she has to pay a price to come to you.

I've become fascinated with falconry ever since I saw your first video with Carol. I have to remind you that what you're doing with Carol is probably quite a bit harder than what many falconers do -- since you caught her as a wild juvenile, she is most definitely a wild animal. Another video I saw was about a Cooper's hawk, and he made sure to get a chick, so that he could have it imprint on him. I think that makes a HUGE difference in how he relates to (and trains with) his hawk. What you are doing is harder, in my opinion...! It looks to me like you're doing great, keep up the good work. Matt

That is one damn smart bird, haha! I feel like we can see her looking at you, at the bag, at the lure, and figuring it all out, in her own way. Though she kind of looked annoyed with you, too, as you removed the string from the lure. As if she was saying "Hey, hey, human, what the hell are you doing with my thing? That's MY thing, why are you putting it away?? I'm not DONE yet, give it back!" I am still very much enjoying your Carol videos! It seems like it's much harder to train a creature out of a bad habit, doesn't it? Not just hawks, really any animal and even people. Good luck on hunting her, and hope to hear from y'all again soon!!

She's still young and was out of the nest for only a few months, it's a feed me response that chicks do so the parents feed them. My guess is that in some way she sees you as a parental figure and that when she sees the bag (as before with the storage container) as that she's going to be fed. That's just my guess, not sure if I am right but I do know that's what they do when they want to be fed as a chick.

It would be very...educational to see the two of you working together with Carol. Also...was wondering... Once you've completed your apprenticeship and you become a general falconer, would you keep Carol? Or are you interested getting another type of raptor like a goshawk or falcon? Thanks man! Cheers!

Right on, paying your dues, yes agree, they are full of shit. I would like to say that a lure is a full meal deal. 2 lessons, lure means a full crop and limits her desire to carry, making in to her will be much easier. Next year you will have to share your adventures with your new hawk, each one will keep teaching you, even after more than 2 decades I find each one teaches me something new. Good job, oh and only count to 3, lol

Is that a cooler or a fridge on your bench? Also something you might try, model airplane gliders have a box with a motor to pull them you could build something like this to pull the bait. Her flaring up on a lure is probably her weight being too high, not sure what weight you hunt her at but seems you could probably shave off a few grams... My RT has a 30 gram window where I'm happy with her effort and drive to kill anything that moves. I refuse to fly her outside of that window... Just a thought.
@ShawnXYZ85
5 жыл бұрын
@@Maxx.Powell oh ya there's always a lot of variables! Take my opinion with a grain of salt but keep weighing her every day and dial in her peak performance weight! My passage RT is 1000-1030grams, any lower and she's weak, any higher and she isn't motivated so I keep her there to hunt and then slightly increase that hunt weight as she builds muscle. I bet you'll love the results you see when finding her best weight and keeping her within 20grams of it.

Only thing I have to say is while you're new and you're training a bird that is also new to all of this, focus more on just training the bird and less on filming. You're going to continue to learn, as I think you have been starting to, that your falconry isn't about what you put online. Your falconry is being 100% focused on the bird while working with her, at all times. Silly mistakes can be made just by being distracted. I'm not hating on you, but instead of standing there saying "I need to work on not making her think I'm stealing the lure, and getting her to not fly away with it", and filming that as it happens because you're distracted, just put the camera down and do that.

Nice to see a new video about Carol and your Falconery. I subscribed to this channel a few weeks ago and I have watched what I believe to be all of your videos and I recommend that you go to the pet store and buy a few rabbit or gerbil and then use real lures and that will be a real treat for Carol to fly down and catch the gerbals alive and eat them or the rabbits and that will give you practice in the exchange of the game for a lure or whatever you use to make a exchange with and to make it easier for you, have the rabbit on a leash so it doesn't escape before it gets caught by Carol and post a video of the catch, you don't need to worry about the haters, your loyal Falconery army will attack the haters, we are rooting for you

If you can't find any squirrels or rabbits maybe try rats? Create a small pen and set a rat free in it so she can still hunt live, but it's still in a confined area where she is comfortable.
