A dog in avoidance behavior. Horrible. The harness is as wrong as possible. This has nothing to do with positive leash orientation

hi bro, great video thanks, i have a doberman (el flako) i would love to take him to walk but he just refuses to use the leash, either on the neck or with the thing that goes on the chest. whenever i put him the leash he just lays down and does not stand up untill i remove the leash, or he will start pulling the leash with his hands and then bites it, but he never walks. I have tried with some dog treats, and he does walk but obviously just looking for the treats when they are over he stops or grabs the leash. What can i do my man? i hope you can help us :). Greetings from mexico

so like when the dog is pulling, it's good to like make a turn?

I would pull the leash up, often I have him up to haha, I got a halter, not a 'thing' around the neck (totally losing my english knowledge right now). I often try turns to, but it's still a lot of work with him. Also because I'm the only one in the house doing it properly - like I would make sure I walk out of the door before him(the dog), if he walks out first, i'd go back- so it's not easy then to learn him the right way to walk on leash. Another problem, he turned 1y in may, so he's still young, and not neutered!! And it's very hard to walk with him as he wants to stop everywhere he smells a dog :/ But I certainly do not shout, I can be hard an strict in my moms eyes, but I think that's needed at moments!!

well I started to do that before I would go to the pulling, but if that didn't work I would also sometimes just stop and wait until he came next to me and sat down, and then i would walk again ---- I'm speaking past sense cause Mickey (the dog) died 17 january, he got hit by 2 cars and died :'( wasn't even 2 y old (he escaped)! BUT we are getting a new dog a few weeks, a month? (not to replace him, we just always had a dog in our lives ant it's weird and sad not having one right now, we have that love to give) SO now we're going for a pup instead of an already older dog from the shelter, in the hopes we will be able to educate it properly so something like that won't happen again

I have a Siberian Husky that I'm currently trying to train to walk by my side, he's 10-11 years old and has been pulling his whole life but he's pretty well mannered, never has a bad attitude or bites he just doesn't respond well to training since he's very stubborn but also smart. We've had to use a pronged collar on him because he's just so strong and it's the only thing that eases his pulling. When we were not using it he was powerful and constant with his pulling it caused shoulder/joint problems to whoever walked him. I've read a lot of articles on how to train your dog's to stay by your side while walking and some suggest the tug motion, when the dog pulls give a pull back but with the pronged collar I don't want to hurt him by tugging on it, I'm also not even sure if that's good training advice. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated, he's just non-stop pulling and I think I've been training him wrong, as of I've been holding him close to my side so he has to walk beside me or behind me but he's pulling almost the whole time, is that an incorrect way to teach him? Since he's still pulling? Also I've been choosing when he can sniff/pee, which he's doing great on that part. We do all the training on trails in the woods so there's no distractions as well but I'm not sure if that will make him act differently when in public?

The dog is anxious the whole time when you are training and walking him. He is licking his lips, yawning, keeping his tail down, doesn't dare to sniff the ground etc. The dog tries to message you that he is afraid or nervous and you read it as calmness? This is not how you should train your dog when you have other, better options like positive reinforcement training, which is based on actual science. Not only to add that the pack theory that you are mentioning here is outdated since people have found out that dogs don't work that way. Just google it. As a "pack leader" you are simply making the dog to be afraid of you. That's why it seems to work, not because the dog "respects" you. Making the dog anxious and stressed like this can easily result in other behavior problems like aggression.

any basic training class will explain and correct the lunging. The woman stays behind as the dog drags her and she smiles in embarrassment. Nearly no owner enrolls in a class and completes it (typically 6 weekly lessons).

Wouldn't it work better if the leash was high around the head? I've always had much more control when the collar or leash was just behind the ears.

Has the owner moved from the harness back to the collar, or is the harness necessary to maintain the correct response from the dog?
