On August 18th (2024) we embarked on a trip across Oklahoma and Kansas. Several trains were spotted along the way, most notably in Oklahoma City (OK), Newton (KS), Wichita (KS) and Wellington (KS). A wide variety of locomotive power was spotted; from old school Burlington Northern/Santa Fe relics in OKC and Newton, to present day GE’s on the transcon in Wellington. A brief visit was made to Union Pacific’s Yard in Oklahoma City, but there wasn’t much other than a GP38N.
For locomotive power in particular, the highlight was BNSF #3133 (GP50 with BN paint) in Oklahoma City. BNSF #3952 (Santa Fe slug) was spotted in Newton, along with BNSF #1446 (BN SD60M) and #1648 (ATSF SD40-2) on a local. A grain train was also spotted in Wichita with BNSF #979 (H1 Dash 9) on the point.
