Leyland station sits on one of the oldest railway lines in the United Kingdom. The station was opened by the North Union Railway on 31 October 1838, originally as 'Golden Hill' until it was renamed to 'Leyland' later the same year. The area also gave name to the Leyland Motor Corporation, founded nearby in 1896, which later became part of the notorious British car firm, British Leyland, in 1968.
Leyland station was originally built with two platforms in an island platform formation but the platform was rebuilt and two new side platforms were added in 1880, allowing more trains to pass through the station.
Nowadays, the station is a popular commuter station and, just south of the station, the line splits with one route travelling to Wigan and the other heading towards Bolton and Manchester.
