In this video we visit Parkdale, a small station on the Frankston Line in Melbourne's south eastern suburbs. Here we see the usual assortment of Metro trains that operate along the Frankston Line including Comeng, Siemens, and X'trapolis trains. We also see the QUBE Long Island Steel Train heading to the Bluescope Steel Mill in Hastings, hauled by VL357 & VL360. On this particular day Steamrail were operating shuttles on the Frankston Line between Glen Huntly and Mordialloc with steam locomotive K190 and the Tait electric multiple unit. We see this train passing through twice with one-way transfers to and from Mordialloc for the lunch break. We mostly film clips on platform 2 as that was sunny-side, but we do also see some clips recorded on platform 1, and the adjacent Parkers Road level crossing.
Parkdale station opened on the 1st September 1919 and apart from minor changes and alterations over the years (including some minor upgrades as part of the Bayside Rail Project around 2014), the station has barely changed. The station features two weatherboard buildings on each platform, including a sheltered waiting area. Unfortunately on the 9th April 2023 the main weatherboard building on platform 1 was damaged by fire; the damage of which can still be seen.
Parkdale station won't remain in its current state for much longer. As part of the grade separation of the Parkers Road and Warrigal Road level crossings, Parkdale station will be rebuilt as an elevated skyrail station. The current station is set to close on Saturday 21st October 2023 to enable the rail corridor to be temporarily relocated and construction on the new station to commence. The new station is set to open in mid-2024.
