I went to Woodstock 99! It was miserable from day 1. They would barely let you bring anything in with you so you were forced to buy from them. We noticed after day 2 they weren't paying attention to what people were bringing in anymore so we left got food, water and beer and came back. It was the middle of the summer and the whole thing took place on an old black top air base so it was brutally hot and we were sleeping in tents. I remember seeing Metallica and that was cool but we left early because it was too much. When we got back home to Massachusetts we started seeing news reports for all the craziness happening. We were like thank God we left when we did!

I had a different experience at Woodstock 99. I lived in a small town about 15 or so minutes from Rome NY where the festival took place. I was working for clear channel radio at the time as a board operator cause I was only 17. That job connected me with Joe Griffo who was the mayor of Rome. I ran his morning AM radio show. He got me a couple tickets to the event and after weeks of begging my parents I got the go ahead. I went with a couple friends from high school and we were all under the drinking age so we got to see Woodstock differently. Sure we took every substance handed to us. Who wouldn’t? It’s a once in a lifetime event but we were not drinking alcohol. Being a local we knew all the local stores so when gaps in the wall started we snuck out and brought in cases of water and traded for weed and mushrooms lol. But two things happened. The older folks drunk out of their mind did 99% of the foul ass shit that happened there. With no real security or police presence they should not of served alcohol. There was a quarter of a million people on that runway with zero law and order. That was a disaster waiting to happen. Second and equally at fault was the fucking price gouging that happened, I went with 250 bucks. For a 17 year old kid that should of been more than enough. But I was broke by day two just trying to eat as little as I could and stay hydrated. Just imagine how fast you’ll go broke when a small 50 cent bottle of water is going for 8 bucks. And no I wasn’t going to drink the shit water lol. I wouldn’t of been able to stay all 3 days if we didn’t find a way to sneak out and snuggle water back in. Day 3 needed to happen. They deserved the destruction they got. I feel bad for the women that were abused there, I met a really nice girl my age who felt safe with us and stayed with us till we got separated on the third day. Back then cellphones weren’t really a thing so I never found a way to stay in touch with her. But we brought her into our little circle and all just kind of watched out for each other. Again though, alcohol shouldn’t of been allowed without more structure to protect people from how fucked up that drug is.

@@davidsummer8631 damn sure would have. The stars are living well getting free stuff and literally on the other side of the wall was people cooking in the hot sun with rapidly deteriorating conditions and price gouging by the vendors. 1999 was one of the hottest summers on record in NY state-when you live in the city like I do and is surrounded by asphalt and concrete the heat just makes everything worse. There were on a airstrip with no shade on cement hot enough to melt shoes…that alone is enough to drive the anger levels to 100.

90 percent of what happened in 99 happened in 69. There was sexual assault, drugs and lack of sanitation in 1969. The concert goers also left a mess when they left. The only difference between 1999 and 1969 was that MTV was covering it and it was put on by a promotional company not organically started. The nostalgic feeling for the hippie vibes of the original Woodstock cloud the fact that several of the same issues of Woodstock 99 occurred 30 years prior, there was just less coverage.

I seriously wonder how many participants of Jan 6th from their late 30s to mid 50s, were also present during Woodstock '99. I ask this because it feels like W.S. '99 was a precursor to the societal rage we are feeling now.

The original Woodstock sprouted from the idea of establishing a recording studio and the concert was supposed to support that idea. Max Yasgur allowing his farm to be used as a site was what really made it happen. Check out a book call Young Men with Unlimited Capital by Joel Rosenman, John Roberts and Robert Pilpel.

And sure enough when it didn't the media portrayed it as a sign of Generation X instead of that the fact that the culture at that time created the perfect environment for things to get out of control. I'm Gen X as well, and I don't think we were "shallower" than the '69 crowd. Bottom line is, NO ONE asked for another Woodstock. But Boomers have rose-tinted glasses that they like to view their youth behind and wanted their kids to have the same experience. But as Korey says, times were very different for us. We weren't trying to live their lives or listen to their music or have their experiences. Plus, the '69 Woodstock had it's own problems that everyone likes to ignore because the movie only shows great performances and the crowd loving each other. But it wasn't like that at all.

Because you all, we all have to make some kind of plans for ourselves. It's a free concert from now on... But the one major thing you have to remember tonight when you back up to the woods to go to sleep or if you stay here, is that the man next to you is your brother and you damn well better treat each other that way, cause if you don't, then we blow the whole thing, but we've got it right there." ~Wavy Gravy~ Woodstock '69
