I really enjoy my Mini and other Trangia cook kits that I have. One thing to be aware of with the Mini is that, if you set it up in the wind, once it heats up it will turn into an absolute blow torch. IMHO, it becomes quite dangerous to use. The increased oxygen to the alcohol burner and the increased air movement from wind generate high, very hot and unpredictable flames. I experienced this when I first got my Mini when the tip of my thumb caught a very quick sideways blast of flame from the burner resulting in a third degree burn. It didn't take more than a fraction of a second. If this blow torch phenomena happens while the stove is sitting on top of an old, dry, weathered picnic table, you may have a bonfire on your hands. Nowadays, I'm careful to set up my Mini only where the breeze is mild, and I further keep things under control and improve the cooking speed with a thin, lightweight aluminum windscreen. Oh, and a big thumbs up on the poached egg technique with the Mini pan. I'm gonna give that a try.

Have you looked at some of the mods for the spirit burner with bronze wool, carbon felt, and a little steel screening? I've made mine basically spill proof, and it burns with a lovely, steady blue flame now. Might slow it's actual boil 500 mil time, but for me, it's much more stable and reliable now. Plus it makes actually simmering totally possible. I'm in love with this mini-kit : )

I bought one, partly as a result of watching this video (and several others). I have had a Trangia 27 for decades and was recently given another. I received the Mini Trangia this week and tried it out on the patio just to boil some water and get a feel for it. It was a blustery night, but hardly a storm, and the flames were spectacular to the point of dangerous. I then tried it in the garage, where there is a draught but no wind. It was much more controlled but the flames still licked up the side of the pan. For completeness, I then tried with the simmer ring in the fully open position. (This is how simmer rings were on the much earlier burners, without the sliding disc.) The flame was much more stable. I then tried it outside again in the wind with the simmer ring. The flame with wind + simmer ring was comparable to the flame with no wind and no simmer ring. Note that the windshield gets very hot. Certainly the T27 is a safer unit more stable on an uneven surface, and with a safer burn in windy conditions. It seems most people who use the MIni use a separate wind shield, which negates some of the advantages of the Mini being light and compact. All that said, the Mini is cute and nicely designed, and I'm sure that with practice, I will get better at making it work.

Firstly. Great to hear you tested it first. Imagine having that happen while on a moor or in a woodland. I have not found a way to use this stove without a separate wind shield or a very big rock to cook near. Same with my triangle. You’re right. It is a cute stove, but when it can be controlled it’s incredibly effective for its size. I look forward to hearing what you cook with it!

A piece of tinfoil from a baking dish works well I my experience. Cut it long enough to wrap around the Trangia excuse for a windshield with about an inch to spare all around and wide enough to just clear the base of the pot/pan. You'll need a few holes poked in the base to help with airflow or the burner may be able to work at its best.

kk k that’s fair enough. I would like to see them produce a non Teflon version. I do prefer it when things aren’t coated myself.

What kind of fuel that you use? Kerosene?

I used ethylene. Depending on where you are in the world it has different names. Denatured alcohol in the states. Or methylated spirits.

@@OffTheBeatenPot oh thanks for the answer, and once more. Which one do you think is better? Gas based / fluid based fuel?

@@imandabayu7611 now there’s a question! I think there is a place for both. But I always reach for my trangia. Which is the alcohol (fluid) based.

Great video I love the Trangia stove. If ever there was a zombie apocalypse and the whole of human society turned on itself, you won't be one of the ones going hungry mate. Fair play.

@@OffTheBeatenPot yes I have one if you use steel curtain clips you can clip a windscreen on to it around the top of the Trangia triangle
