i felt the same way, it is difficult but as he said it’s a process. As long as you practice that range will just get lower and lower and you won’t have soprano high but maybe a lot will be your high or tenor yknow?
@andrewbawiec4175
6 жыл бұрын
Pre-T, I was a tenor (or a low alto), so my voice was already pretty low. When I started T, it was easiest to tell that my voice was lowering because I could feel every single low note that I could finally reach. I’ve been able to adjust, but I hate that some songs I can’t sing like I used to so transposing has become a necessity. I’m 6 months on T. My falsetto can still reach a soprano, and I’m now a baritone (G2-G4) and I can finally feel happy and comfortable in my voice. I still need to work on my upper range strength, but I have been working a lot, especially since I am in the school musical (as a tenor, rip my voice). Honestly, I think my singing voice has gotten better. It no longer stands out as a feminine voice in an awkward range, it finally fits just how I wanted. I feel like once I have top surgery my voice will get even stronger because I won’t be binding, and I’ll feel confident, and that will translate into my singing. Okay that’s my singing story, bye y’all

Glad I found this - I've been on T for nearly a year, was a high Soprano with a clear mezzo belt before, and my voice TANKED. As in, I now sing nearly two octaves lower than I did before. I'm hoping to stretch it back up a bit more, but there's a whole range I cannot sing in at all. But the highest notes are stronger and easier - so I can sing like Jim Morrison and do the operatic stuff of Freddie Mercury, but I cannot do, for example, Ed Sheeran in the middle. That whole range is just gone. Trying to be patient, but it's certainly a new instrument.

Thank you for making this video! I'm so frustrated with the myth that you're automatically gonna lose your singing voice on T. It's not like there aren't any cis men that can sing post-puberty. It's all about practice :D Your advice was really good. Especially the binder part is something I feel. I've been at singing lessons and struggled with some practices (in a binder) and when I come home and take the binder off it's a lot easier.

You're welcome! I would be lying if that thought didn't cross my mind when I was thinking about starting T and when I asked my endo before T what would happen to my singing voice, he just kind of laughed and said, "You'll still have it. It will just be lower." And that has been true for me for the most part! Obviously some qualities changed, but I still can sing! Often times people forget how much wearing a binder can affect them, so I felt it was important to note!

Thank you so much for this! I'm an actor and singer (mezzo) and I rely on my voice so much as a means of income, so I've been really anxious about the voice change. I'm so afraid my voice wont be as good. I've had over a decade of actor training and have full control over my natural voice, and I worry that going on T may cause problems for me. Your videos have been really helpful. Theres definitely still fear there, but I feel its lessening by the day!

A friend of mine slowly worked his way from baritone E-1 - F4 and got his old mezzo soprano range back on his fifth year. Doubling what he had before reaching to D-1 to C6. Now he will have his first hysterectomy. Which might change things again. But since he was told his ticking time bombs where already squashed anyway. He is confident to get it back again. He also learned how to false scream from the Zehn Of Screaming, and where to find his resonate areas, the mixed voice, and using good old handy whistle register for fun. He told me his key was pretty much hitting the high notes as lightly as you can and learning control. And not worry about volume. A well build diaphragm is where all the power is. Anyway it will be interesting if he can get it back.

Thank you so much. Hopefully I'll get my high notes back one day. Yes, my will to sing high, and my likening for my high singing voice does not invalidate my vocal dysphoria that accrues when I talk. Thank you for reminding me that one day it'll all settle for a new reality and that even though I like those changes it's legit to be scared of them because it's still changes and that's all new but one day I'll get used to it all. I start T next month, and i want everything that comes with it. i want my speaking voice lower, my body fat to be distributed away from my hips, broader shoulders, male hairline, etc.. but the thought of not being able to belt along with divas makes me really sad. like i know there are men with really wide ranges and men who can sing very solidly in their falsetto, but my singing voice is just something that's always been Mine and having it be different is something i'm not totally ready for.

I have shed so many tears over wanting to go on low-dose T but being afraid for my voice. My range has already shifted down over the last decade due to either age, PCOS, or just lack of practice in the head voice, and Im so afraid of losing what few high notes I have left. I literally struggle above a D5 now, where G5 used to be my struggle point. That being said, I have decided to do it, for the other benefits. But I want to record a set of speaking and singing every day so that the changes can be analyzed. I also want to record a few songs where I duet myself pre and post T.

I feel like the most important thing is to just be mindful of how your body is feeling. If you feel any kind of tightness in your throat or jaw, stop and take a wee break. Breath support is incredibly important so wearing a looser binder is probably a really good idea. I've been wearing looser binders because being able to breathe well is very important to me since grounding myself with my breath really helps me manage my anxiety. Great video.. I'm really enjoying my singing voice. I'm almost at 8 months on T and I'm just so happy that my vocal range is lower. It just feels so much better. Before I felt uncomfortable singing which sucked because I love music. Now I can take full advantage of my new and wonderful voice. =) Cheers!

These are not just good notes for people on T, but good notes in general. My friend Chris has hypogonadism, he's been singing with different groups his whole life and has pretty much gone through the same thing. He's on T. Everyone should try and do their best with the range they have. For me, yeah, I try and do a lot of things that hurt my vocal chords but I just power through it till I eventually get it. I'm in a weird position I feel like, right now, where before T I never knew anything about singing, I have no idea what my range is (was), no idea what the difference between pitch and tone and range and all of these terms is and always felt intimidated by all of the terminology... but now that I am a few months on T and can feel that I'm not able to hum and sing along with the same songs that I always have I'm feeling a little sad and frustrated and wish that I had anticipated that and learned some of the basics of singing beforehand so I could be taking care of my voice right now, I guess. Like I almost want to take lessons, even though I've never even been talented at singing before I went on T, just because I don't want to lose the ability to sing for fun on my own at home- but with my voice cracking and changing like I would feel embarrassed and I don't know if it would be much help to me now since I would be starting from scratch. I don't know, I know this is definitely not the position you were in when you started T, but would you have any advice for someone like me who knows nothing about singing but kind of wants to learn the basics *because* the way my voice is changing is making me a little nervous? I'm sure that this won't be too hard for me.....Hopefully. I've had to retrain myself in singing multiple times before. Due to a surgery gone wrong, I'm missing a bone in my palate and I had lost my ability to sing in the same way as it felt different. In two weeks, I was able to get a new style. However, I always stuck around the same genre in the end. I'm sure that if you're very passionate with singing, it will be the same as training yourself to sing during normal puberty. Just try and hit lower notes you've always wanted to hit.

Now I'm almost 5 months on T. I would say my voice is kinda strange right now. I was an alto, but my voice is not low. It was very obvious a girl voice. Now I am a baritone, however my voice sounds really "gender neutral". TBH it is not a good timbre for a baritone. When I sing falsetto it sounds like girl. In the lower range it sounds like a man, but still has a little bit "girl's voice" . I can't say I love my voice, but at least is better than before.

Great video mate. I'm pre-T but I'm fascinated by my voice in that even now at 26 I sound like a choir boy. Very crisp and bright with not much vibrato. I'm hoping that will help in that on T it'll flourish into a nice rich baritone voice or something similar. I wanted to ask though, what's your opinion on T dosage? An idea I have which others have suggested is starting off on a slower dose and building it up over around 9 months. What do you think of this? Did you start off with a higher dosage or was gradual build-up what you did as well?

im in a little bit of a dilemma with going on t, i've wanted to for over 2 years and just got the ok from my psychologist. however, i was cast as anatole for a small, student led production of natasha, pierre, and the great comet of 1812, and i already have the perfect vocal range (as in can comfortably do all the low notes and the infamous 'for petersburg' line), but it's in 2 years so if i went on t at any point between now and then, it would ruin my voice for the show. it's a shame bc i want literally every other effect, but i'm already a tenor (that can technically go up to sop 2) so i dont want my voice to get any lower. help??

Unfortunately, the only person who can make that decision for yourself is you. Personally, I would decide what is most important to me: that role or starting testosterone. With testosterone, you can't really pick and choose what effects will/won't happen. You can maybe delay the effects by having a lower dose, but you can't choose the effects. It may be possible to do both the show and be on T, but, in my experience, you're going to likely have to transpose the music down.

Heyo - got any recommended vocal warm up videos that might help through the first few years on T, cracks and all?

Oddly enough my voice pre t was so shitty, and now, almost 7 months on t I can actually sing a lil bit. I'm not sure why though

I've heard from multiple people that being on T gives an experience of having a voice that matches what they saw/heard for themselves. So, it could be that you are getting more comfortable and willing to work with it a bit more!

Im scared because I want to start T but the only reaosn I dont is because I'm so afriad of loosing my highest pitch. I have seven octaves and im a saprano. Will I loose it? Thats the only reason that is holding me back.

Hey Jeff, did you get your voice type assessed after starting T? It sounds to me that you’re a tenor, not a baritone.

Hello! Yes, I have been assessed and range checked by multiple vocal coaches and music directors. I work in theater professionally as a musician and actor - and can confidently still say I am a true baritone. I have developed falsetto that can push me to baritenor territory, but I am definitely more a baritone than a tenor!

So I've been on T just over a year now, but I don't have any history of proper vocal lessons. I want to start learning to sing though...how should I approach it? Just standard vocal training or do I need to take any extra precautions?

If you can't sing off t, do you think someone could learn and become okay at singing while they are on t?

Hi, someone who has sung since they were a baby here and who is on T now, it's definitely possible to learn at any point but just be aware that it will be very difficult while your voice is changing, you'll probably have times when you learn something and then a month later you can't do it the way you were because your voice has just changed so much, I know for me I'm struggling finding out how to get into my falsetto at all because I'm not yet used to my new vocal chords. I used to sit naturally in tenor pre-T, but could get alto and soprano parts, and now I'm a baritone/bass and that's it, but I know I can work back up to my higher notes. So if you do start learning while on T, just don't be too hard on yourself, and have fun!

okay so, im already a Tenor and i dont want to drop to a bass after T (im still pre-T) so should i still take testosterone?

Whether or not to take T is a question you need to ask yourself and decide if you're comfortable with all of the potential changes that will come. You are the only one who can make that decision. I can't make it for you.

Hey, I was wondering if you started T with a high dose, or a low dose that slowly increased? What your opinion is on starting high or low? I've heard starting low helps with singing, but at the same time starting low sounds painstaking, you know? Thanks for if you can respond!

Hello! I mentioned this in the description, but I did not personally start with a low dose as I started with the regular dose my doctor recommended for me. As for my opinion on high versus low, you're right that starting low can help your body ease into the changes. With testosterone, you are lengthening and increasing the size of your vocal chords. A lower dose would likely mean that you are not increasing the size as fast and for some people that is preferred. For a lot of those who are choosing the lower dose, they need constant control over their voice and easing into it is what they want/need. But, ultimately, it is your choice to determine which suits you best. Good luck!
