Did you know that there seems to be a lack of quality Gunboat 68 reviews on KZitem? Perhaps in the future, you could create a review of the boat that showcases its unique and intriguing features.

Very interesting steering / rudder system on that Gunboat. Solid hit. Sad to see a nice bit of carbon art trashed. Does Gunboat keep spares (rudder and box) in stock? or do they need to build them for ya'll? Would love to see photos of the rudder box / cassette system after its repaired.

We do know what we hit but as I'm sure you're aware we work professionally in the industry and although we can share a lot with you all on KZitem we can't share everything. @@youngbarnacles I am not a sailor, just an admirer. Therefore, I’m not sure why you cannot share what you hit because you work professionally? If it’s flotsam what is the harm in mentioning that? I’ve heard of underwater/sleeper containers, and heard about orcas and whales that either are hit or hit you. Is it an insurance thing? Again, I don’t understand the need to not be transparent. 🤷♂️ (Still, that’s got to suck … and be a bit disconcerting, especially since it’s not your first experience. Makes me question how much trash is floating about in our oceans. Sad thought.)

Nice video and a nice feel for how the boat goes. How many crew for the delivery? I'm also curious about the load on the furler line. Why wouldn't they just fit a big rope clutch rather than always carrying it on the winch?
@youngbarnacles
Жыл бұрын
5 crew for delivery
@youngbarnacles
Жыл бұрын
The furling line is continuous therefore we can't get it into a clutch. All the furlers are removable so we can't splice it into clutch either. The solution is to put 2 cam cleats into the combing to hold them while sail is furled. It's on the boat's "to do" list

Hi! Should what you've hit got the saildrive it'd have been a different story, right? The only boat I've seen where you can replace the rudder without getting wet is the Seawind 1600. Maybe more manufacturers should consider this nowadays, be it for the debris or also thanks to orcas... I also believe there'd better be a turn into driveshafts too. At least for bluewater sailboats. Thank God everything went well. Fair winds!

A gunboat 66 (Moondoggie, not sure about others) has a rudder that can be lifted out without getting wet. You can also lift them part way for shallow water.
@youngbarnacles
Жыл бұрын
Yes, it would have been a very different story if we hit the saildrives. In terms of the rudders- the Gunboat's main feature is the retractable rudder. There are many other cats that use this system too. Seawind attempted to do the same but their efforts fell far short in the execution of this concept.

Yes, the saildrives on these Gunboat catamarans are indeed the biggest turnoff. I don’t understand why did VPLP opted for the saildrives on these uber expensive cats when a high quality aquadrive coupling and shaft system would’ve made these yachts way safer on long offshore passages. Unfortunately the oceans are full of all sorts of debris including partially sunk sea containers which probably constitute the worst nightmare for the sailing community, especially if they’re hiding just a few feet under the surface and can’t be seen even during the daylight hours.

Great video! At approx 7 minutes into video with single rudder you had headsail and no mainsail at all up. Sorry if it is a dumb question but would you not want some mainsail up to help balance the sails to make it easier on the single rudder and autopilot? Not a criticism but just curious. Thanks!
@youngbarnacles
Жыл бұрын
Not a silly question at all. In this scenario we had just reduced sail from 3rd reef. This boat does not have a 4th reef like Paikea so we had to run no mainsail. As it was a downwind situation it was ok to run like this.

@@tonewreck1the US Navy would be hit with heavy fines if one if our ships struck a whale. i don't in know if its the same for civilian boats. he said he hopes he never sees anything like that again..im not sure if it was because of the visusl aftermath or simply the stress of losing a rudder.

I'm interested in purchasing my first catamaran, after owning several mono hulls. My impression of cats in the past was big, slow, and underpowered in the sail department. I've narrowed down my choices to the Gunboat, and the Outremer I have two questions about the Gunboat, can you install a Watt & Sea pod 600 on both hulls and can you option two seats and tillers on the stern?
