The transcortical motor aphasias (TCAs) resembles Broca’s aphasia ,but repetition is intact in this.
Pathophysiology :
It involves lesions of left frontal lobe- supplementary motor area, just anterior & superior to Broca’s area.
Anterior frontal lobe of language dominant hemisphere is essential for initiating and maintaining speech
Damage to this area causes difficulty in initiating speech
Clinical features:
During acute phase, patients may initially present as mute but later they show normal repetition & comprehension, with limited
& slow speech.
Repetition can be so well preserved that the patients display echolalia, repeating everything they hear.
