Compared to the sequels, this first Transformers is the Casa Blanca of this franchise.

This movie's quality was compromised for many reasons (Michael Bay can never write good characters) one of which was the agreements needed to work with the US Military. The military characters were all bland and boring, and the movie really DOES feel like an Army recruitment video. That's why there are too many human characters -- you had Shia and Megan, Sam's parents, and Turturro's government stooge. Then on top of that, you lay on the always-forgettable Josh Duhamel, the Secretary of Defense for some reason, and a bunch of boring military brats that clutter the movie and inflate the running time. One of the best director's commentaries I ever heard was Michael Bay's commentary on Transformers 2. He was open at what a disaster the making of that movie was, and he was pretty frank about the script control that you are required to give the military if you want their cooperation in the making of your movie.

I've got my gripes with the Micheal Bay movies, but the plastic we got out of it was great, and "Arrival of the Autobots" still goes so hard

Watching the behind the scenes of a lot of his movies. So much work goes in to the practical effects. The Transformers are obviously CGI but a ton of the world and what they interact with isn't. You really get a sense of what an amazing director and the amazing team he worked on these movies with to make the destruction look so real.

You'd really really like Pain and Gain. It's one of his better movies and easily one of the Rock's best performances. It hilarious

Yeah this franchise peaked with the first one (the Bumblebee standalone was great but that's it). It was the coolest thing ever as a 10 year old but now that I've grown up it's flawed movie that has potential to be much more but doesn't really desire to be and it comes back to the Michael Bay quote about making movies for 12 year old boys. That being said the last scene with Optimus Prime monologuing with Linkin Park in the background is GOATed.
