I think the thing that we’ve seen with animated movies is that just because they open low, doesn’t mean they will stay low. The problem with Transformers is that Wild Robot is opening soon, and I know people who are actually super excited about that movie who don’t normally go to the movies.

Transformers One should be a lesson to everyone that even when you release a great film that’s well received it’s not always gonna do well at the box office. Even with it taking the franchise back to the roots and formula of what made it work back in the old days I guess they just didn’t market it well enough to an audience that could consume it in droves. I think the release date also was not smart for the film given its target audience is all back in school right now.😅

I think a fair comp for the Transformers animated film is Clone Wars. A traditionally live action franchise (at least film wise) jumping to animation that failed to come near the series’ normal performance. It just doesn’t appeal to the core audience, although it might do well in the long run if it catches on with home viewing. I expect the animated LotR film to perform just as poorly, even if they do seem to be targeting an older audience.

Thank you. Dan does a great job reporting on franchises. Do you think some films should have footnotes or asterisks? 1. Should animated films be tracked separately? a) Like, Transformers, Spiderverse, and Star Wars. b) Where should the most recent Lion King and the upcoming sequel be placed? To be live action, or not to be live action, it doesn't matter. We love how it triggers Dan. 😂 2. Should standalone films be included or at least have an asterisk. a) Like Logan, Bumblebee, Rogue One, and Hobbs and Shaw? b) How about franchises of franchises' sequels like Venim and Morbius? 3. How about franchises being blended together in one film? a. It's bound to happen for the MCU and X-Men franchises. b. Dan, on his own, just combines all Marvel franchises into one. Why? Too much work or he's losing it. Just kidding. Too complex, my brain feels like it's tripping. 4. Where should a standalone film be placed if the standalone actually becomes canon, a prequel to a future film? a) Like if and when Shaw and Hobbs rejoin a future F&F sequel and some S&H plot line is important to the new movie?

I work in a cinema in Canada. It was very frequent that when people walked past the Transformers One poster in the hall, a remark would be made about how it looks lame and they weren't going to go see an animated movie and it should be live action. I think part of it is they've just changed the franchise perception over the past almost 20 years now and to casual movie goers, an animated film felt like a step back

😂 I find it funny that people who enjoyed a children's franchise in live action somehow feels like a cartoon is more immature?! People are funny. Can only imagine they don't like being reminded that they're watching children's toys and a children's franchise... because that would mean they're not quite so mature as they like to make out. 😅 It's ok to enjoy animation guys. You're not a loser for enjoying innocent or family friendly things. You can be manly and still appreciate WALL.E. 🙄 Personally, I'm just not a massive Transformers fan and I haven't watched one of these in cinema since the second Michael Bay film so... that group of people were unlikely to rush out for this film. Hope it starts to do well though. Will always be glad when something of good quality finds its audience AND makes money.

I feel bad for Chris Hemsworth. Now he has two box office disappointments despite both movies are very good: Furiosa and now, Transformers One. Just because a movie underperforms at the box office despite solid reviews doesn’t mean that it’s going to find new life on home media and end up getting a cult following. I love Transformers One, I think it’s one of the best animated films of the year (so far) and I agree that the franchise had lost steam in recent years, but if it wasn’t for the success of the Michael Bay films despite its not everyone’s cup of tea, it shows that it’s still a billion-dollar franchise over the last two decades and yes, I defended Revenge of the Fallen, 15 years later as one of the underrated film in the series.
