Wow! Looked like a real light bulb moment for both of you! Throughout the video you can see him relax and his confidence seems to grow as he finds he has more time to think and see a fence rather than his rushing. Maybe a bit of a shock to him that he actually doesn’t know best🤣 Well done! You’re such a subtle yet effective rider 👏🏼👏🏼

Rushing fences doesn't mean the horse is keen, it means they lack confidence and are overcompensating with speed.

This very much, rushing is an anxiety response. The horse is not comfortable doing what he is doing.

@@footluceeventingUnfortunately that's the answer of most equestrians who don't have good knowledge about horse behaviour or how they learn.. "Well he likes jumping since he's so keen", "He wouldn't jump if he didn't want to". The answer is, yes he would. If a horse stops and gets "punished" (Ie. kicked on, whipped, spurred) some will start rushing and seem like they are happy to jump. But really, they do not want and/or expect punishement. In other cases they may be other sources of stress other than punishement like; Hitting the fence, not feeling in balance, not feeling physically ready, feeling pressured, feeling pain. Because as soon they are over the jump it relieves some form of the pressure put on them by us riders. They just want to get it over with in other words. Now yes some horses will stop instead and may look like they "don't want to jump". But what would you do in that case? "punish". So really the horse is left with no other answer but to jump even if they don't want to or can't. Some horses may not mind jumping but that doesn't mean they enjoy it. They don't live their lives wanting to jump. They just want to "please us".

@nerosiskou04

@footluceeventing I have no doubt she may be a very qualified trainer on purely a horse performance basis. But I was more so explaining from a behavioural aspect which you seem to have missed. Not about teaching your horse how to run in circles and jump over things. Clearly this horse is showing some sign of stress or avoidance when being asked to jump and rushing into it again, is quite far from the idea he is enjoying it or "keen". Most modern day "traditional" trainers have poor understanding of horse instinctual behaviour and learning quadrants. If you don't wish to have a bit of self-awareness in that sense you are just doing your horse a disfavour.

This horse clearly isn’t comfortable the tail swishing,bolting,running before and after fences,the constant ‘playing with the bit’ ,all signs of an uncomfortable horse. i would love to know why you think he is keen rather than uncomfortable.These behaviour are common not normal they shouldn’t be downplayed as him being keen or exited.
