Hello Father. I’ve read a couple of your books which have reinforced my belief in the Orthodox Church. Unfortunately, there are not any Orthodox churches near me. I drifted from the Roman Catholic Church, from which my parents raised me, over the years, but have grown closer to the Bible, and your teachings drew me to the Orthodox Church. Thank you. Hopefully I will be able to become part of the Orthodox community at some point. Again, thank you.

I hope we both find purpose in our life on Earth from now on, and never lose Faith and Hope. We don't know what follows, but we have to Trust our Lord with His Plan to save every soul. You can listen to some Orthodox Christian Singing and/or read something from the Elders of our time - like St. Paisios of Mount Athos, St. Porphyrios Kafsokalyvite, and others. In time of need those things help me great deal. I hope they ease your pain and help you too, give you a Beam of God's Light into your heart, your soul and your life.

Her struggle and sickness forced me to change many of my sinful and degenerate behaviors. I would not be the person I am today without her suffering in the world. I came to orthodoxy through an experience of Christ in a liturgy this summer. I was instantly ready to give my life to Christ. (I am now a catechumen.) Having come from a “shamanic” background regarding “spirituality,” one of my current crosses is learning to separate all the wheat of now from the chaff of the past, with regards to my “visionary experiences.” When I first heard of Blessed Father Seraphim Rose, I checked him out. I listened to a talk by him about the future times, and - I, being pridefully in the hands of prelest but not knowing it at the time - turned it off not long after starting it. “Too fundamentalist for me, thank you!” A few months pass, and I finally read ‘Orthodoxy and the Religion of the Future.’ Lord have mercy… I immediately turned face. Father Seraphim knew exactly what he was talking about. In a word, the book scared the heck out of me - because Christ is the Truth. Period. Full-stop. I realized how wrong I was about Fr Seraphim, and ever since, have become a devotee of his ministry. Fast forward to the beginning of this week: I finally began asking for his intercessions. I have never prayed to any saint before. I felt weird doing it. But I am going through all this pain to type this on my phone to say that his intercessions are real. I don’t know what a miracle is “supposed to look like,” but ever since I began praying to him this week, I have had multiple encounters with his name and works… Like how I “happened” to find his biography lying haphazardly on a bottom case of the choir room at church. Or how some KZitemr uploaded a video - this week - of a restored recording of Fr Seraphim speaking. Or how I usually listen to you via audio only, Fr Spyridon, but I “happened” to look at my phone just as this quote of Fr Seraphim came on screen. I could go on… (Should I note too that I also live in the redwoods, only two hours from Platina and the St Herman of Alaska Brotherhood?) Lord have mercy… By the prayers of our holy fathers, the Theotokos, and Blessed Father Seraphim Rose, Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and save us!

Father Spyridon, thank you for acknowledging that mental/emotional suffering is real. So often mental/emotional suffering or trauma seems to be dismissed, and the person even blamed for weakness or personal sin in a way that the person suffering a physical illness (even if that physical illness was caused by a willing life-decision) is not. Sometimes a person doesn't even believe mental/emotional suffering is "real" until it happens to them. Sometimes people think they're mentally/emotionally/spiritually strong enough to handle anything. Maybe it's to show us our complete weakness that God allows life to slap us so hard sometimes. God have mercy. (And it sounded like those dogs were chasing or harassing your goats!)

How far does God's providence extend? Is it safe to say that all events are guided by the hand of God or do our choice influence God's decision? I liked the quote by seraphim Rose at the end it is very true that people seek God more through suffering than through pleasure. The entire purpose of the Human Being is to grow closer to God and many would rather not begin than the start the race trip up and get back up again. Some saints were so sensitive to sin that it depressed them daily, what worldly person would understand?

I really liked this. I don't necessarily listen to your talks for guidance. I listen mostly to see if you can clearly confirm what I know from my own experience. And you are one of the only Christian teachers that can do it. Maybe the only that I've heard, and I've heard quite a few over a lifetime. That doesn't mean I know the ultimate, because I don't. But I do know what is beyond body+mind, and to some extent, how that experience manifests. Anyway, this talk makes me question how you can acknowledge the work of monks and nuns and that there are saints, and then also think that we only bind to flesh once. That is a view of someone that believes the spirit arises from flesh, but I don't see it that way. I assume you think that. But as I see things, our spirits must continue to suffer life and death until we all attain the levels of sainthood. There is no real salvation until then. And we don't only get one chance. Our chances are infinite, in infinite realms, and that is our hell, and our cross. What makes a saint is a man that has gone beyond sense gratification, stimulation, and pleasure; a man that has died before death of the body, and has seen reality unadulterated by body+mind. I don't know your view on that, but such is mine.

Not really understanding what he means about errors rooted in Roman Catholicism. I've been RCC all my life and I completely agree with everything he said. I agree with it because it was taught to me by the RCC and because I try to live it to the best of my ability. I do think in the decades since Vatican II the teaching has been watered down and diluted. Important things such as carrying the cross have never gone away, but the message seems to lack something. It is there but it seems small and weak in the face of the messages the world puts out. The world says get rid of suffering. The RCC says we can use it for our salvation and for the salvation of others. I think if there were 5 RCC priests and 5 Orthodox priests debating different topics, they would eventually find they really believed and taught the same things. The difference would be how they taught as well as personal preferences. That is what think though.
