For anyone looking to start PF2 I wanna point out, character creation may look complex compared to 5E at first but it’s one of those cases where this doesn’t transfer into gameplay itself, once you have the character everything is “plug and play” and isn’t that hard. Don’t be discouraged by the breadth of options
@gamekastlecollegepark

This is a *major* reason why we chose not to address character creation. Very much recommend playing your first PF2E game with a pregen and then making a character later. Local Pathfinder Society chapters are also a great resource for learning how to play

May LOOK? Let's be honest here, it absolutely is more complex than 5E. But yeah, after character creation, the play isn't that much more complex.
@JacksonOwex

@@ColdNapalm42 I don't think character creation is harder, in fact I think it's the opposite, ESPECIALLY once you've done it a few times! Paizo found a VERY intuitive way to create characters, at least for me! Now I also have to admit that I use Wanderer's Guide to create characters now so that's literally just choose your stuff and it plugs it all in at the end! Though in the beginning I DID make characters without an app/program to do the figuring for me! Pathfinder is NOT as hard as people want to make it out to be, it's just SPELLED OUT for us and we don't have to wonder about things or make them up on the fly NEARLY as much as it feels like with 5E!

Another thing I find amazing about the crit rules is that some abilities and spells have different effects when you critically succeed. IE you want to turn your enemy into a frog with the 'baleful polymorph' spell. If he critically succeeds in the save, he is unnafected. If he succeeds, he gets Sick1 and a funny feature, say a really large frog tongue. If he fails he turns into a frog, but he still has his mind intact. If a critical failure occours, not only he turns into a frog he also behaves like a frog for the duration. It is all in the spell's description. This adds a lot of variety.

minor clarification on reactions: You can use a reaction on your turn, it is just unlikely that the trigger of your own reaction will happen on your turn and will usually be in response to other reactions and readied actions.
@Necroes
Жыл бұрын
Okay, so, to those watching; Here are the five big things you Really need to know about P2. 1.) "Attacks of Opportunity" can only be made if you have a feature that says you can. Most enemies get them, but not all players do. This is true of a lot of actions, where you basically have to be 'trained' to do something that realistically anyone should be able to do. However, it's most obvious with attacks of opportunity. 2.) Modifiers; They're everywhere. Pathfinder loves conditional modifiers. 5e used the advantage/disadvantage system. Pathfinder hands out bonuses and penalties (usually +2/-2) based on the situation, and there are a lot of them. Many of which stack, but also a lot don't, and you constantly need to patrol players on if they're using/stacking bonuses correctly. 3.) Customization; Pathfinder lives and breathes on the player's ability to build their own character. 'Subclasses' are just not a thing, you're basically expected to build your own. Multiclassing is not only encouraged, but expected. 4.) Feats; You get tons of them. At least one per level, most often more. A lot of them are going to revolve around those situational modifiers I talked about. This means more versatility, but also a LOT more to keep track of during play. 5.) Gold and items; Pathfinder 2e doesn't have the attunement system. Player characters are expected to have dozens of magical items on them at any time, with most of them being single-use items. They also are expected to earn gold at a rate to support buying all of those items, so they get a lot more of it. Player characters walking around with tens of thousands of gold worth of gear (per player, not the party all together) is expected by as early as level 15. Also, this was kind of mentioned in the video (not directly, but can be inferred); The numbers in pathfinder 2e are Much bigger. By level 15, expect players to be able to roll above a 40 on most things, including attack rolls. AC also regularly gets well above thirty at upper levels of play. Editors note: Everything after this point is mostly in response to people disagreeing with me below. If you're only interested in general knowledge about the difference between the systems, feel free to stop reading here. EDIT: In response to several of the comments made in response to this, I am going to expand on a few points. Firstly, these issues I list are not in a vacuum. They are in comparison to, specifically, 5e D&D. Secondly, to anyone who made the massively idiotic statement that 'X and Y issue are only a problem for the DM,' let me be clear about this; The DM IS a player. The more complicated a game system is to run as a DM, the less likely people will be to Be a DM, and you can not play without a DM. In general, P2 has a habit of making combats easier for DMs to plan, but harder for them to execute. Thirdly, I have indeed played Pathfinder 2nd Edition. More over, I have played a Lot of Pathfinder 1st edition, and personally consider it the better game. That said, my purpose here was not to talk down about the system. I do, quite frequently, speak poorly of P2, but that's not what I'm doing here. Finally, I'm going to expand on the points I already made, to make myself more clear. The list got long, so you can find my expanded explanations about my above claims in a separate response below.

Thank you for pointing out some important things missing from the video, but I'd like to add some important considerations: 1) Multiclassing is nothing like multiclassing in 5e, and I wouldn't say it is "expected". Using archetypes does tend to make for stronger characters but it's not a make or break kinda deal. In 5e multiclassing a sorcerer or paladin with 2 levels of hexblade results in a much stronger character. 2) There are official variant rules in the book that switch the game into a more 5e bounded-accuracy style game with reasonable numbers and no Christmas tree magic item carrying characters

nr 2, and by extension nr 4, will likely be the reason why our group won't switch to this system. We like less things to keep track of during play and loads of situational bonuses are the bane of that. Stacking bonuses during character build is completely fine though. We might end up playing 5e for a long time, just with the books we already own and without giving any more money to WotC.

You are awesome!! Two corrections though: reactions USUALLY happens on someone else's turn, they don't HAVE to. For example, if you have a reaction like that: Trigger" An enemy targets you with a melee Strike If you take a move action on your turn, and that action triggers an attack of opportunity and the enemy hits you with a melee attack, that absolutely can trigger your reaction even if it's your turn. Here is the quote from the rules: You can use a reaction on anyone’s turn (including your own), but only when its trigger occurs. Second: your ability score is NOT part of your proficiency bonus. You add it to the rolls you make. So an athletic check would be: d20+ proficiency bonus+ strength modifier+ other bonuses. While that may sound pedantic, it is an important distinction for some feats like assurance that let you just take 10+ proficiency to a skill instead of rolling.

One thing I loved about PF2E over 5E I didn't see mentioned, although it's not really a mechanic in game thing, was how character creation worked. You have two things to pick from in what would just be race in 5E, and they can mix and match. Want to play an elf changeling? Sure. Gnome werewolf? Go ahead. Tiefling goblin? Okay. I know a lot of traditional players might be turned off from veering so off the standard fantasy PC races, but it gives you a lot of options while letting you play what is usually just a fancy human.

I used to DM and play PF1e but I had a few issues back then. 1- it was way too crunchy. As a DM creating NPCs was hell because the stat blocks were full pages, and you couldn’t really skip much. 2- the players were pretty toxic (I hate using that word). But I put together a paladin for PF society, other players would constantly bitch that I should be playing a war cleric instead. I almost fought a guy because he was screaming at my wife who was playing a Druid and had a snow leopard pet. Guy was pissed because she used stats for a jaguar or something bc they didn’t have snow leopards… Just want to see if it’s still hardcore rules lawyering or if it’s a bit more relaxed like D&D

Attack of opportunity is a classic reaction, I agree, but unlike D&D, where everyone can do an Opportunity Attack (D&D 5e term), a Pathfinder 2e character needs the feat by the same name, or to play a fighter. (there may be other ways, that I don't know about)

I feel like for reactions, it would have been best to just say that they work the same as in 5e. Attacks of opportunity are a good example, but while everyone gets them in 5e, in PF2e only Fighters get them and they work a bit differently. Also, Barbarians and Champions (5e players call them paladins) can get opportunity attacks as a feat at level 6. (Though stuff beyond level 1 is probably beyond the scope of a beginner’s tutorial.) Anyway, love that more people are talking about Pathfinder now.

Great video. I've done plenty of pathfinder 1E but not yet 2E. I very much like how you describe the breakdown of the bonuses. It seems like they've done a good job of removing the gazillion stacking bonuses that used to make 1E very crunchy and easy to get wrong without making it almost too simplistic like D&D 5E. I do think bounded accuracy created as many problems as it solved. And by contrast it looks like Pathfinder 2E does a good job of simplifying things in a good way without throwing out what really worked already.

A lot of the rules you're talking about are either optional or can be made optional by the GM - remember, FUN is the important thing in any TTRPG! Every GM I've ever played with has house rules. As long as they're applied even handedly - i.e. to both the players and the NPCs - its a 'no harm, no foul' kind of situation. That said, yeah, Pathfinder is a lot more complex than 5e, intentionally. Well, really, 5e was intentionally made a simple as it could be in order to apply to a broader audience. Most of what you're complaining about are standard to most game systems in the past 20+ years.

Great vid, but I think you should add info about multiclassing as it works differently from DnD and PF1e. Instead of "taking a lvl" in another class, you spend a class feat to unlock access to som of that class or archetype's ability and feat choices (most of which require additional feats to unlock) In other words, you can't have a lvl 5 fighter, lvl 5 rogue. You can have a lvl 10 fighter, that has some rogue abilities (like a weaker sneak attack, trapfinder and extra skills) A lvl 10 wizard can have a ranger animal companion from dipping one of the several option that get that, but even then he has max spell progression in his wizard spells (because it's tied to the lvl of the character and not your feat choices) This system might seem weird, but works really well and is way simpler to do.

@gamekastlecollegepark

Outside combat you can pretty much ignore them. The action symbols are there for when you’re in initiative order. Outside combat, you usually aren’t. But if you had a situation where it mattered how long things took outside combat they could be helpful. For instance if the party was in a chase they wouldn’t be fighting exactly, but you might want to keep up with turns.

Good little bit for getting people up to speed if they choose to switch over. Really do enjoy PF2, but it seems from 5e players there is a reluctance to try it due to a perception of it being insanely complicated (I know I have seen a few turned off by the size of the rulebook), may try to show a few more this video to get them a little more confident. But the video did remind me of a little bug I have about terminology used: I always hated that Paizo tells you that you have three actions in a turn and some actions take multiple actions to do. Almost feel like they needed a second pass on that so they didn't have it phrased like that. Its almost like using a word to define itself.

Just gotta let them know that the CRB is actually TWO books from D&D, and that the GMG isn't actually what it sounds like to them! I like how they handle crits like how I'd prefer DnD handled crits. 1 and 20 being autos is so nonsensical. Being way over or way under being criticals makes WAY more sense and is way more rewarding for doing good or bad rather than simply getting lucky. The action economy makes more sense too, kinda. I mean one can run and gun in theory. (Totally should have made the tiny square the free action)
