This is BRILLIANT!!! I've been a Spanish teacher for 15 years. This is my first year as an ESL teacher. I have two Egyptian students who only speak Arabic. This will be a LIFE SAVER! Thank you soooo much for sharing this!

Great video, really appreciate the attention to logistical detail. Only thing I'd add, is that it is an option to share your screen, with the translated captions, instead of needing everyone in a g-meet to adjust their caption and browser settings. Then again, it's such a powerful tool to be able to use it's surely worth teaching everyone how to use it always haha :)

This is a really cool thing to do and I truly appreciate that you took the time to educate people on how to do this. I have one question. Why does it revert back to my default language on its own? it could happen in 30 seconds of 30 minutes but eventually, it will just go back on its own.

Interesting. So, you could be in a Google Meet meeting, have your captions/translations turned on, and then the captions stop translating after a certain amount of time has passed?

Hi Paul, can we download the translated caption as a transcription for research purpose?
@Dietrichucation

Very sorry for the late reply! If it's still applicable: Google has its own transcription service, but it won't work with personal Google accounts. If your school has a specific Google Workspace tier, you may have access to the transcription feature: workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2022/10/google-meet-transcripts.html#:~:text=To%20use%20transcripts%20in%20a,saved%20to%20their%20Google%20Drive.

Sooo cool! Questions...1. Paul, does the teacher have to change it in order for the student to do it on the student end? And 2. If the Google Meet is recorded, are the captions automatically recorded in the translated language that was chosen? Thanks!
@Dietrichucation

Hello! 1) The student can turn on Captions on their own. They don't need the teacher to do this for them. 2) I tried this, and Google Meet doesn't record the Captions (it does record the Chat). Teachers would need to use screen recording software/extension to record their screen for later tutorials if they want to show the captions (Screencastify, Loom, etc.) Having the Captions also recorded would be great feedback for Google.

Hey! Do you know how to turn this feature on with an iPad? My students were issued iPads and when they press the turn on captions button, it preferences English. I know I can right click and press translate to.... but they did not see that option. Do you know the trick? Thank you!

What do you mean by "upper writing"? Are you referring to the captions themselves or something else?

Hi Fernanda. At the moment, the captions aren't recorded when you record a Google Meet. What you can use, though, is screen-recording software. This site gives you some recommendations: www.oberlo.com/blog/screen-recording-software You may want to also check out Loom. Educators get the Education Plan for free. I believe you can record up to 45 minutes with the Education plan. You can also do some very basic video editing afterward as well.

if the student speak Chinese and I speak English how to translate to CC. the CC does not recognize Chinese.??
@Dietrichucation

Google Translate apparently has two forms of Chinese on its list: Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional). I didn't specifically see Cantonese or Mandarin, for example. What you can try to do on your end is right click anywhere on the Google Meet once the meeting has started and select "Translate to English". This will force the captions to be in English (for you).

I've only been able to adjust the size of the captions themselves, not how many lines I see coming up at once. I'll keep on the lookout, though!

@Dietrichucation

If you follow these directions, is Filipino/Tagalog not listed? From a Google Support site: 1. In your meeting, click More options > Settings > Captions 2. Turn on captions 3. Select the 'Language of the meeting'. 4. Turn on Translated captions. 5. Select the language to translate into. If I right click on the page and click on "Translate to English" (it may be another language for you), I do see Filipino as one of the selectable options.
