Bob, what if the original seal is leaking? What would be the best replacement? Also, he used Mercon V in a 5R110W transmission. I thought those were very specific to either Mercon SP or Mercon LP fluid. Everything I have read says the same thing, “only use Mercon SP or Mercon LP”. I want to make sure I do it all right because I use mine to pull my equipment. I can’t afford to lose a transmission.

I've seen a couple of comments that touch on this, but it is so important that I think it really needs to be well noted: This is not really a fluid change, it is a partial fluid change. A full fluid change is called a flush and replaces all of the fluid. The type of change depicted here only replaces a fraction of the fluid in an automatic trans and the few quarts of new fluid mixes with many more quarts of old fluid.

Good video on the procedure, however anyone doing this I recommend that you reuse your factory gasket if it's not damaged. And if it is damaged then you use a ford one from the Ford parts store and you do not need a he sieve and you most certainly do not need to put silicone on the top side that is self-defeating there's no reason to put silicone on it.

I just looked into it recently for my 03 f250, mercon sp and now the more recently recommended mercon LV (low viscosity) is the fluid to use. Using mercon 5 might make it feel like it's shifting funny. Going forward I would recommend mercon LV. Apparenly mercon 5 might work, but it is not equivalent to Mercon SP or LV. Also false claims from Valvoline on their Synthetic ATF have screwed with many of these ford transmissions claiming to be equivalent to mercon LV, but still making the transmission shift funny. It's how I got my truck so cheap, dude said it had a bad tranny, but used the Valvoline fluid. I did a flush and replaced both filters and its all set now.

Does this leave the transmission dry at initiial startup after the fluid change? I always thought the proper procedure to do this required the new fluid to be pumped in so that the system doesn't go dry. By just draining the pan, several quarts ot dirty fluid will remain in the transmission and will mix with the 4-5 quarts of new fluid that are added.

This must be his first time changing transmission fluid. Didn't reuse the reusable gasket, didn't remove the magnet so to clean under it, used adhesive and silicone! You never do that. If any gets into the trans, big problems. Never run it dry. Over fill 4 quarts and remove the return line put a hose on the line to a gallon container (no fluid will come out of the open fitting you removed the line from, if it does you have bigger problems) start engine shut it off when it's filled. It fills slow. If the fluid still isn't clear red, add a couple more quarts and do it again.
