my 90 year old granma loved it. She was wide eyed when Luffy first extended his arm to hit Alvida, and at the part where Nami is nagging Luffy for letting Zoro fight Mihawk, she told me, with a very serious face "Sometimes you gotta let boys be boys, so they can become men, but you cannot blame her bcs she is not a mom" I was flabbergasted by her words of wisdom since she has gone a bit senile as of late, but the show had her snappy and sharp, meaning it grabbed her attention fully. I had the same thought Connor did, that this might be too weird for normies. BUT, I then had a similar experience to Garnt, where I was able to get two normie friends of mine invested in the show. Like, glued to the screen invested. I think that anime fans see cringe where normies don't, and vice versa. For example, Luffy constantly talking about his goal comes off as cheesy to someone who watches a lot of shonen and is familiar with that trope, but it might just seem like a unique character trait to someone who isn't as steeped in the genre.
@chuckbatmangaming

I think that's very true about Luffy, Western live-action shows are full of jaded protagonists with a chip on their shoulder, so plop an optimistic goofy shonen main character like Luffy into that kind of show and you've got something really fresh and different. It works even better because there are other characters, mainly Nami and Zorro, who fill that "jaded stoic badass with a chip on their shoulder" role and you get to watch them slowly come around to Luffy's way of thinking, just as the audience would

I have little to no familiarity with the anime or manga. But it's honestly refreshing to see a live-action nerdy property that's just unapologetically silly and over the top. Especially after the abundance of meta 'Whedon-esque' humor in nerdy movies this past decade (e.g. "Erm... That sounded better in my head." "Well, THAT just happened!") that always need to make sure that the audience knows that the movie also cynically sees itself as silly. It's nice to see a show that doesn't feel like it has to justify it's silliness with a wink and nod to the audience and instead proudly say "Yeah, this shit is goofy and ridiculous. Watch it, or don't." I see characters like Merry who styled himself like a ram, or that one navy who has a mouse ears hat and whiskers, and was pleasantly surprised to see everyone taking them seriously, with no character taking cheap digs at their appearance. Really allows me to be more immersed and just go "Yep, this is probably just a normal thing in this crazy fantasy world."

There are live-action Sonic MOVIES and therefore they have the budget and whole composition built to fit the CG characters specifically. How many consistently present CG characters that interact with the environment do you see in live-action shows? Every second active on screen they bleed money. Also the way you compare implied they'd actually make a fully "unreal" character like Sonic and not even have prosthetics and/or puppetry that are patched with CGI, which is far more laborious in the long-term.

There's probably 4 distinct ways they can attempt to do Chopper. First and most expensive is to go full CGI and have a Detective Pikachu or Rocket Raccoon like character. Second is to have a full puppet like Baby Yoda. Doesn't look as realistic, but because of that it avoids the uncanny valley. Third option is a human kid in reindeer makeup VFX. The biggest issue with this one is that the actor will noticeably age throughout the seasons of the show and it would be much more noticeable than the aging of the young adult cast. Lastly a short person in a full costume like the Ewoks from Star wars. This works, but these tend to be the less emotive option and it makes it hard for the actor to stand out.

Most of the production timeline for se 01 was preproduction and writing. Makes a lot of sense since I can only imagine that time wws spent ironing out story beats and detailing changes from the manga with Oda as well as casting and artistic direction (ie. What will the sea kings look like? How accurate do we want the costumes to look like? Does finishing move callouts work? Etc.) The actual principle photography only took about 8 months and post production took ab a year. So it would probably take roughly 2 years for the next season- possibly even less since most of the development work can be more streamlined this time around

He probably won't due to time and his job, but yeah. In terms of recommending the show to "normies" who has no intro to anime, I'd preface it as a tv show that is closer to a theater performance. The characters are camp and zany, and there's a lot of suspension of disbelief. The corny-ness is part of the charm. If they're the type of person to like that kind of genre, they'd probably like the live action.

I'm an anime fan but never watched One Piece. At first I wasn't sure, but I've slowly seen its virtues and am surprised by how much I like it, just not as an anime fan. As a 90s kid, I slowly find myself seeing it as if it were a prequal within the Hook universe. The slightly janky but colourful set pieces, exagerrated characters and costumes, the Luffie actor imbues the energy of a young Robin Williams Peter Pan, and Garp carries the presence of Hoffman's Hook (the sense of disturbing a family accord, also taking an ally of the protagonist under their wing - Peter's son for Hook, and Koby for Luffie). Zoro also plays off of Luffie like Rufio does Peter. You can feel the creative ways they've tried to realise such a colourful world with the modest means of our reality, and it's charming. Also, there's plenty pirating. As a millenial with a lot of nostalgic attachment to Hook, I just love all that.

literally goes against not only his entire character, but the point of different Zoan forms. and their voice would not work for chopper. he is canonically about like 14 or 15 so a little person could not act as him, and ADR’ing over it would look terrible. and a child playing chopper would work either, for the same reasons, plus they would grow up. the best solution is a CGI and puppet mix for his small form and reindeer form. a real actor in prosthetics for his beast form. and CGI and practical effects for his guard point form.
