Travel Across America with Me. Get a chance to see the Idaho state capitol in this video. Boise was chosen to be the state capital in 1890. Bois is French for “trees.” Inspiration for the neoclassical capitol’s design was derived from the U.S. Capitol and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy. Completed in 1920, it was constructed of classic red Georgian, grey Alaskan, green Vermont, and black Italian marble. The capitol sports 219 pillars, and the dome supports a five-foot, seven-inch bronze eagle. The absolutely stunning statehouse was rededicated in January 2010 after a three-year restoration and renovation project, which included the addition of underground wings. While visiting the capitol be sure to learn about the gold, wood statue of George Washington riding a horse, scagliola, the liberty bell, and the final dispositions of historic trees that once graced the capitol grounds. This was one of the most stunning and interesting capitols we have toured. In the comments below, tell me which capitols you have visited.
