Thank you so much! I’m so happy you enjoyed this crazy video, ! At some point when there’s enough mishaps, you just have to shake your head and laugh! Getting angry wasn’t going to help me or anybody else so you know you’re not in control of that point and you just have to control your attitude. I have to say that as much of a fiasco this was most people in the airport were actually pretty kind and did not take it out on the flight personnel who had no control over the situation either.

Eunice! I’m in the middle of watching your video, but wanted to comment before I forgot. My mother is Japanese, and we grew up eating Spam regularly, as an easy meal for us kids. Just recounting how she prepared Spam. She stuck a fork directly into the meat in the can, at an angle, then wiggled it out. When frying, because it is “fatty”, she used no oil, butter, etc., but she allowed it to crisp and brown with a cover on the pan, keeping the Spam juicy-she didn’t add any flavoring. We ate it with rice, and a splash of soy sauce. Many times, she would cut the slices into strips, add diagonally sliced celery, and a splash of water and stir fry it, served with rice. You can use any green, bok choy, spinach, Napa, etc. For my own children, I would make them “rice balls”, with a chunk of fried Spam in the center, and a splash of soy sauce, and put each ball,(about the size of an egg) in a baggie for car trips! Spam is so versatile, I hope you will experiment! ❤️

I’m eurasian, too, and I wonder if you look like a perfect blend between your parents like me? Also, trick with the SPAM is to allow air to get in to the can - I just give it a bit of a squeeze, and then shake the can and it pops right out every time. No utensils needed. Also, I don’t know if you know, but our taste buds change in air travel, which is why they put a ton of sodium and sugars in the foods they serve in flight. That being said, there’s something about tomato juice (I can’t recall off hand) that even people who don’t normally like to drink it will enjoy. I wonder how a dish with SPAM and tomato sauce with macaroni pasta or something might fare. Will be trying this out in April! Aloha! Hope you enjoy many more trips with your father!

Something I have started doing recently is making a big pot of something and then sealing them in small bags in bento box portions and sticking in the freezer. That makes preparing bento boxes for picnics or travel much easier. Yesterday I made a double recipe of oden and today I made a triple recipe of nishime, which I really love. I put in extra mirin and sugar since I like it on the sweeter side. Each freezer bag has about 1/4 cup, just enough for one bento compartment.

Hearing you guys laugh and make the best of the downturns, almost makes the mishaps worth it. You’ll never forget this- special memories and stories to tell. Beautiful. Tip to try for spam. My mom is Jamaican- she used to slice the spam, but then dip it in an egg (that she beat with a fork in a bowl) seasoned with black pepper, and I’d add a little onion powder to the egg mix. And then fry it till crispy. It’s really good! It cuts the saltiness.

Hi Mary, well, you’re talking to the person who eats stuff at room temperature all the time, so it doesn’t bother me. I will say that that chicken was fried pretty good so I can’t imagine there be many germs on it. I think many foods are safe at room temperature for a while I think that we’ve gotten a little carried away with having to have everything refrigerated all the time.. if you go to Asia ever you’ll notice there’s a lot of things just sitting out in the open room temperature. But if you have a very sensitive stomach, you might want to think carefully.😉

First I want to say your dear mom she is still here right, I hope so. Ok as for the spam Musubi, we especially here in Hawaii, and Asians in Asia do not eat it from the can without frying yuck, maybe that’s why mainlanders don’t like spam.they must eat it from the can. So we always fry it even to point of almost burning it, we fry well. Do you know in Hawaii McDonald’s has a spam rice egg plate, I believe here in Hawaii we consume the most spam. You fry well you do not need oil especially if you got non stick pan no oil is necessary. The Musubi here are the size of the whole spam, People here make them wrap them and you can take them on a plane same as eating a sandwich. It can last hours. So here you can just do spam without the Teri sauce just rice, spam, and many of us sprinkle Furikake. I like to do rice spam rice, so the spam is in the middle. You can make the Teri glaze just they way you did, but I do an easy way sugar and soy sauce. You can add egg, or here in Hawaii, there are many different Musubi, hot dog, chicken, shrimp, Katsu, salmon, konbu, Hawaii has so many variations of musubi. Spam though is the all time favorite. I was quite surprised it was your first time eating spam since you are half Asian. A lot of mainlanders who come to Hawaii say they never eat spam, but once they learn how we eat it, you know like frying it, then they become very accustomed to eating it. Hawaii sells the mold to make the Musubi it’s all over and maybe you can find it online. If you like ochazuke, you will love it with a side or two of well fried spam. Oh and some Kim chee or takuan on the side. Here in Hawaii for field trips we always say the kids have so much more interesting lunches than a plain old pbj, nothing wrong but when you have a field trip lunch with Musubi, fried chicken, chow fun, it’s one of the best things about field trips the bento lunches,that we can buy at our local okazuya or homemade, Your bento was beautiful I was impressed, and you are such a nice daughter, and your dad is a handsome man. Now you didn’t say where your destination was going to be. Another thing that goes well into bentos are edamame, but don’t shell it put it in whole and they can just slide the edamame in their mouth. Looks appealing and not to mention very tasty. When you visit Hawaii go to 7 11 and you will see all kinds of musubi, they are all over the place but 711 is one of the most inexpensive. But spam Musubi is one of those foods that’s always best made at home. Great video as always love your videos and always look forward to them Thumbs up

I just LOVE your video. You made thoughtful and beautiful food to share with your dad for memorable moment. Though thing’s did NOT go as you planned, the things that did, made your trip much more memorable. Because of these unforeseen offsets, those wonderful memories with your dad were more engraved. Thank you for sharing. 📞 You will never look at a hotel phone the same; you will always remember this story! Blessings, Barbara.

Thank you so much, Barbara! We decided just to make the best out of a tough situation, and you just have to laugh sometimes. We were very blessed that at least we had that food because everything in the airport at the hotels were shut down by the time we checked in. I couldn’t believe that that phone cord was cut. Kind of gave me an eerie feeling like what went on in that hotel room before we were there.😂🤣

Your bento box meal looked delicious! Sorry you had so many problems! Crazy! We’ve had musubi a couple times and have made it a couple times over the last ten years. We’ll go through phases of trying different cuisines and Asian foods are a favorite (my husband is half Korean). We’re going to Hawaii this summer and can’t wait to try musubi there since apparently it’s sold everywhere!

Love this idea Question though, does the meat stay food safe for hours?
@TheoryofSimple
Жыл бұрын
Well, I took it out of the refrigerator at 9 o’clock in the morning and we ate it by 7 PM that evening. The meat is cooked really well and we didn’t get sick from it. However, if you have a really sensitive stomach you might want to think about that but like my dad told me he left pizza out all night college and ate it the next day and nothing happened to you.🤪

LOVED LOVED LOVED this video. Please do more Bento/ Asian meal prep videos. I also loved your other travel snacks one. Eunice, are you familiar with Xplorer Steve DIY’s channel? I thought of him as soon as you said “this is for mom.” Steve has a van but also likes to do urban overlanding in his 4-Runner so you’d enjoy seeing his build as well. Not sure if I’m allowed to post links, but the video I want you to see was posted 2 years ago and was a camping trip/homage to his Korean father. The title is: Mountain Solo Camp. Korean BBQ, MukBang and sake toast. Mini SUV camper. I think you will like it.

Love the bento boxes! What a doozy of a flight ordeal! May I ask what Asian market you shopped at? Always good to know where they are in the bay. I've been going to Yaoya-San up in El Cerrito, which is nice, but it's fairly small.

Thank you! I have a few Asian markets, but I travel to around the bay area, depending on what I need. Some Asian markets don’t carry much Japanese food so I’ll have to head to an Asian market that is either strictly Japanese or has a Japanese section.. Tokyo fish market in Berkeley is the best place to get Japanese food! 🥰

I’m seriously asking because I want to make a bento box for my trip coming up on 2/28. Flight leaves at 6 am so I was going to make the box at dinner the night before. Should I put it in the fridge until I leave, or will it be okay on the counter? My house is kept at 68 degrees…but don’t want to get sick. 😄
@TheoryofSimple
Жыл бұрын
Hi Leslie, it was not 24 hours but it was later in the day that we ate it. Kind of reminded me of the Times in college when you would leave pizza out all day and night and then eat it the next day.. everyone’s got a little bit different, but mine handle stuff like that OK. I guess if you have a sensitive stomach you might want to think about it.😉

@TheoryofSimple
Жыл бұрын
@@leslieboyd7453 to be on the safe side I would refrigerate it and it really depends on what you’re packing. Fried food for example, has been fried a very high temperature so a lot of bacteria on it has been killed but if you have something that may have mayonnaise in it, you may want to think about keeping it. I have taken cheese that I’ve left overnight out because for some reason it stays fine and when I lived in France, they ate cheese left out all the time so air on the side of caution if you have a sensitive stomach.🙏😊
