Tip to possibly NOT have to pay the customs fee: when you are declaring your drone next to baggage claim in the Lima airport, they will ask you if you plan to leave the country via the Lima airport, or if you are traveling elsewhere. If your plans are to take a bus across the border into another country (Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, etc.) and not return through the Lima airport to your home country, they will not make you pay the customs fee, as you will not be able to reclaim the fee upon departure. This happened to me as I flew into Lima, took a bus across the border to Chile (Tacna to Arica), and apparently the customs girl misunderstood that my travel plans included returning home through Lima. It is also possible that simply the fact that my travel plans included leaving the country at some point made it bureaucratically inconvenient for me to declare the drone in Lima. Anyways, not having to shell out $180 and then return to the airport 4 - 5 hours early for my return flight was a big relief. Hope this helps someone.

The Drone rules are ridiculous. I've gotten my confiscated at customs and I've had some major issues when flying in different countries. The rules are always changing and its hard to find the most up to date info because its always changing.

The world can be such a small place. I originally found your vlog while searching KZitem for videos about Spain ahead of a recent trip. We live in Dallas and left for our trip, you guessed it, on the 14th of April. We probably passed you in the airport! Love the vlog! You continue to give me ideas of places I want to visit. Cheers!

How are the merino shoes going? They look great in a bunch of shots in this vlog. Isn't the USA the best for electronics! My computer also gave up while we were in Mexico and we were wanting a new camera. Both things that aren't worth buying/fixing there. On our way from Mexico to Japan, because of flight delays, we ended up stuck in LA for 24 hours. It was perfect really because we were able to go camera and computer shopping while there. Love it! Great vid and looking forward to the next load of adventures starting. Cheers - Thomas

the same thing happened to my mac a year ago! I was in South Korea at the time and the price to fix it would have been the same as basically buying a new computer 😭Needless to say I bought a new computer haha A pro tip to anyone who has the same thing happen but you can't afford a new mac at the time- if you plug it into a desktop monitor or TV using an HDMI cable you will be able to see the screen and still use the computer while you save up 👍

Hello Nate and Kate, I found your video when researching drone laws in Peru and even with your instructions I failed to find where to claim it. I asked about 5 airport staff and security personnel where I go to claim my drone. No one seemed to know what I was talking about. After spending an extra hour in the airport trying to do the right thing I gave up and decided to risk it. I spent 4 days in Peru and didn’t have any issue leaving the country with the drone. However, I still recommend taking the appropriate steps with your drone because I still had that voice in the back of my head worried I may get that $250 fine leaving the country.

I need to rewatch the drone procedure. I'm heading to the Inca trail hike at the end of July and I'm bringing the new Spark with me (because I can charge it on the trail with a USB power brick). But even though you went through in April, that's awesome to hear it was easy. I don't speak a word of Spanish, but most have said the english is pretty good when going back to the airport for your drone.

I'm heading to Peru in July. From what I'm told - just declare you have a drone when you get your customs form and they will guide you to the right place. Getting it in is easy - it's getting your money back when you leave which is the tough part. Brendan Van Son is in Peru now and he has some good videos where he brought his in and had no problems.

ohitsROME I'm going on the Inca hike from July 25-Aug 2nd so I'm in the same boat. You can't fly over any ancient ruins but everywhere else you can fly they say. I'm taking the spark because I can charge it with USB battery packs on the trail. The mavic would be too hard to carry with batteries. I suggest taking it if you'll have electricity to recharge.

I have to say I'm not very impressed with American Airlines. I took an $8,000 first class flight to Tokyo and outbound flight with Japan Air was amazing (fully reclining bed, a la carte menu, 32" tv), while American Airlines was marginal at best (1 meal and an upgraded seat). What do you like about American?
