I have never heard that kind of thing in Japan before people shoot dead people and don’t do anything (call Kouban - police office or whatever) And laughing while shooting that. I am shocked. Omg, where was this video a few years ago! I went to Osaka in 2015 and suffered all the things on here! Needed the toilet, but couldn't find it and ended up holding it till an tourist attraction. Battery on 2%, no idea where to charge. No wifi pocket and wouldn't get my sim card to work, got lost everyday. Need bin to place rubbish, carried it with me till I got off the plane from JP. Missed a lot of train, accidentally went on a express train and went pass my station by miles! At least I am now more prepare for my next JP trip next month! :)

I’ve been watching as many Japan videos as I’ve been able to find over the last 5 years and I’ve noticed that anytime a KZitemr makes a “travel tips” video they usually use almost the same information and advice as the last 30 KZitemr’s tip videos and I’ve yet to come across one that showed in addition to telling. This video is simply the best thing I’ve seen good job guys

No. It's an issue for nasty people who like to litter. There are places to toss trash, like 7/11's, which are on almost every block, especially in Tokyo. I lived there and never "tossed it anywhere." If I saw you toss trash, I'll slap you, then you'll have to pick it up.

Simon and Martina ummm our public bathrooms here in Orlando are pretty gross. The most common place to go for the bathroom is at a gas station, but like not just any gas station those are usually even worse. Lol you have to go to like a Racetrack or Wawa. Those are literally the only two I suggest. I’ve been on a road trip before where the bathrooms were so disgusting there was black mold, the locks on the door weren’t working, toilet seats nearly fly out from under you when you sit. And one time I saw a vending machine in the bathroom that sold condoms, that was an interesting day.

In a lot of the bigger shopingcentres I went to (like for example "Thiergalerie" In Dortmund or "Limbecker Platz" in Essen) are having a mashine that blocks your way when you want to go to the toiletes. You need to insert money so it unlocks your way to the washrooms. Than you will get a coupon out of the mashine that gives you 50cent discount in some shops (not all) when you buy stuff for more than 5€ ... Those are mostly run by a company called "Sanifair". At trainstations there is often the same, but older trainstations washrooms are mostly run by a company called " rail&refresh" and the diference here is that you get no coupon for paying to shit/pee

It'd be really cool if you guys did a small series where in each episode you visit a small lesser known town outside of the urban zones. I know Himeji is pretty close to Osaka (and Kobe), but that would be one example...okay it's not a town, but definitely a smaller city to highlight! People in Japan basically do not eat and drink while walking, so there is no problem without trash can.
@ohrats731

My stepmom studied in Japan for a year back in the day and she said it's considered rude to walk around eating or drinking unless you're in a large group and everyone is doing it. Is that true? Some of her stories seemed out of date when I visited Japan for a week
@zam023
6 жыл бұрын
Obviously you do not know the reason why they do it that way. But instead of finding out "why", you just want to impose your way on them. FYI... it is believed that the bins were removed from public spaces after the sarin gas attack in one of Tokyo's subway station.
@zam023
6 жыл бұрын
You are not suppose to eat while walking. Its not about being rude. Its about keeping the surrounding clean. Dringking is still OK but not in a bus or train. Incase the bus/train make abrupt stops, you might spill your drink on other people.
@ohrats731
6 жыл бұрын
zam023 interesting thanks for letting me know. I'm always impressed how organized Japan is and how politeness/being considerate is the norm rather than the exception. I always have to take my stepmom's stories with a grain of salt lol. When I was in Japan we picnicked whenever we found a park but I always bring a plastic bag in my backpack to carry trash back with me. I didn't even notice the lack of trashcans because of that habit
@vivid9982
6 жыл бұрын
The reasons for no trash cans at subway/train stations is because there was a terrorist attack (by a cult called Aum) using a chemical weapon on subways and in subway stations some years ago in the center of Tokyo. After the attacks, trash cans at stations were removed, so that chemical weapons couldn't be planted in them. In other places, trash cans are rare because, in Tokyo, residents have to pay for their garbage to be collected (in the form of buying designated garbage bags) in order to get people to recycle more (waste put out for recycling is collected for free i.e. no need to buy designated garbage bags). If you do not use designated garbage bags, the city will not collect your garbage and it will stay with you forever. If you do not recycle (i.e. put metal cans etc. in the garbage bag with non-recyclable waste), they won't collect your garbage either. Because garbage collection is strictly charged, there are next to no free options to throw away your garbage in public. So, you should carry a plastic bag or something to put your garbage in, and throw it away at the place you are staying, if you're a tourist. It is just to keep Tokyo a livable place by not filling up the existing land fills too quickly. The population of Japan, and Tokyo in particular, is simply too large and the land too small to let people throw away their garbage freely. I hope people who visit Japan would understand the situation.

They’re called Monkey Majik, they’re 2 brothers from Canada and 2 dudes from Japan and they’ve been making music out of Sendai for over 10 years. It’d be so rad to see you guys meet and talk about living life in Japan and your experiences. I used to love their music, so happy and carefree and it reminds me of you two ❤️

Great video guys! And, I like the "choose your own adventure" throwback. I loved those books as a kid. Thanks for the video! Can't wait to see your next one!

The reason there are less trash cans in public in Tokyo now is because of the sarin gas attacks on the subways back in 1995. If you can believe it, I missed that by a mere 10 minutes on my way to school.

The garbage cans next to vending machines are not meant to be general garbage cans. Your are supposed to consume your beverage and throw out only what was purchased from that particular vending machine. I have made that mistake myself a few times but was later corrected 😕

I'll mourn that starbucks cup. How can Japan be so clean and have so little trash cans on the street? That amuses me...

You guys should talk about the escalator etiquette too 😄 I'm from Canada and it's so sad that something so simple and courteous is impossible for people here 😑

mshuynh2 what’s escalators etiquette?
@myyunni
6 жыл бұрын
the people riding the escalator stands on the left side while the ones climbing up or down the escalators can use the left side. really helpful when you're in a rush and helps prevent congestion.

myday_inspirit96 I’m super confused. Do you mean elevators? Or escalator? Because they normally have an escalator that goes up and another that goes down. Unless you are talking about the flat escalator

Linda Elvenia hahaha i really meant escalators. it’s pretty hard to explain. you can search up escalator etiquette on google, there’s some examples 😂

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it prohibited to eat & drink inside a regular train? And also another tip I got from other KZitemr, if you can, get on a Shinkansen from Shinagawa station. Less crowded and also not as big and confusing as Tokyo Station 👍 Great video Simon & Martina! Very helpful & entertaining ❤️

I said the Shinagawa thing too... but the caveat to that the people that board in Tokyo get dibs on the luggage areas.
@SafiraAdani

redfish337 yes I that's true! If you don't have much things with you, boarding from Shinagawa is definitely the way to go. But if you really need the luggage space and have enough time to spare (in case of getting lost), boarding from Tōkyō station might better 👍

Eating & drinking on regular trains is NOT prohibited in Japan, but it is considered bad manner. Drinking plastic bottled drinks is ok. As for Shinagawa station, not all Shinkansen trains stop there, so be careful, it all depends on your destination.
