Yes I remember walking down a houtong long ago in 2002. As a foreigner I wasn't sure what to expect but I did manage to get a shampoo and a haircut in the houtong for about $4 US, even without knowing the language. They had the barber sign in front.

I think the living cost in China, even in big cities like Beijing, is only around 30% of that in north America. The only problem is that the housing price is too high in big cities.

true, Beijing is way crazier than anywhere else in China, if someone own a house there, he's multi-millionaire for CNY, btw the cost of living in China is 30% of that in NA but the salary is 30% of anywhere of developed countries too

China is such a big country, and I hope you get to go visit more cities next time, maybe Guangzhou for Cantonese cuisine, Harbin or Changchun for Northeastern cuisine, Qingdao for seafood (before it gets contaminated), XinJiang for Uyghur cuisine like chicken stew dapanji 大盘鸡, pilaf 抓饭, naan 馕, etc. Sichuan is not the only province to eat spicy food in China, you can also try visit Chongqing and Jiangxi. These 3 provinces are famous for eating spicy food. Chongqing is famous for its Yangtze River connection and its mountain-ish landscape. If you go to Jingdezhen 景德镇, which is in Jiangxi, you can check out the making of old porcelain as well.

I like the length of the video. More to watch lol. The hu tong looks long, maybe easier to rent a bike instead of walking. Great video

The freshness of food is highly appreciated in China. Only a few privileged can still afford to live in these Hutongs. China's cities used to be packed with people, thanks to the rapid development over the last 30 to 40 years, people are now living in a 3-dimensional manner, in high-rise buildings, in huge shopping malls and in subways.

thanks for the video! ived there for a year, miss it all the time. The people, the food, the sights, the taxis, the subway, the si bai wei (subway sandwiches)...That being said, you can't see the blue sky more than half the time, the pollution covers it up. At least when I was there that was the case.

The hutongs are Potemkin villages. Those grey bricks aren't even bricks; they're tiles, made to look like bricks.
