Bali has long been one of the most popular holiday destinations, both for backpackers and those looking for all amenities. White tropical beaches perfect for snorkeling, diving and surfing, ancient temples nestled between the mountains and huge rice fields in which to meditate. And then the many street stalls where you can eat excellent street food typical of the Balinese tradition.
And I decided to take the whole family with us to enjoy the well-deserved summer holidays. Mariuccio has already made friends with a couple of monkeys.
Returning to food, Balinese gastronomy is one of the most varied in the world, influenced by Indonesian, Chinese and Indian cuisine. Balinese dishes are seasoned with unmistakable spices with intense flavors. An element that just cannot be missing in the local cuisine is coconut milk, which gives the dishes an unbeatable creaminess.
And then the rice, which is consumed at every meal, together with vegetables, meat and fish, strictly fresh local spices and a gigantic variety of fresh fruit.
Most of the courses are generally accompanied by a rice dish and a chili sauce. The best known typical Balinese dishes, and that I tried to replicate in this wonderful experience that was the Cooking Class in Ubud, are:
- Jukut Jepang Mekuah: red bean soup and crunchy shallot
- Be Siam Mebase Kalap: Braised chicken leg in coconut and turmeric sauce and curry sauce
- Sate Lilit Ayam: chicken skewers with grated coconut and lime accompanied by peanut sauce.
- Jukut Pakis: green bean salad with lemongrass and spiced garlic and chilli dressing
- Sambal Ulek: tomato and chilli jam
- Nasi Sela: rice with sweet potatoes
- Dadar Gulung: Balinese crepes with grated coconut and palm sugar
Yes, because if you are visiting Bali, you should indulge in one of the many cooking classes in Ubud, in which the guide will take you to a traditional Balinese food market and prepare a delicious Indonesian meal with you. As this cooking class is organized in the guide's house, it will give you the impression of being able to peek into real Balinese cuisine and discover all its flavor too!
But now it's time to show you everything we just said. Sit down and enjoy the video! A hug from Casa Mariola, this time away to Bali! ❤️
