"You are too rich for hate and I am too poor to love" That line hit me hard. It makes perfect sense. The people he's talking about are not rich in terms of money, but happiness. He feels as if he cannot love because he does not possess this happiness and feeling of wholeness. In a sense he envies the bliss that these people have found. I truly can relate to what David is saying in this song, and this line in particular.

Will Checchi so literally he said: "You are too happy to hate and I am too sad to love." Referring to people that finds happiness because of God and then referring to his feeling of hopelessness about life.

@@Kevin.7. In my interpretation, you have it switched. I believe David is saying that people believe in God because they are happy. It is much easier to believe in a loving God when your life is good. When all you get is shit, it is difficult for one to believe that there is some omnipresent being looking out for you. I think he is rather talking about more of a self reflection in that he is assessing why one does or doesn't see life as beautiful and why one does or doesn't believe in a god. He is saying that for some people, they have every reason to see life as beautiful and every reason to believe in a loving God. For others, their sadness and constant struggle provides them no evidence that life is beautiful and no evidence that any higher power exists. He is not saying believing in God is wrong or that it is right. He isn't saying life is bad or that it is good. He is merely assessing why people believe what they do. He is "traveling alone" through life because his life of consistent struggle and pain has provided him no evidence that anyone is with him. But he understands why someone else would believe because they see the evidence in the good things in their life. I don't think he is saying happiness comes from God. He is saying God comes from happiness. But, this is just my personal interpretation. Makes sense to me, I mean, when a child has a disease and is expected to die, but fully recovers, people will typically praise God and say it is a miracle through prayer. That is their evidence of God. God saved the child. But when a child is brutally murdered, for example, who would say that the murder is evidence of God? If anything, some would say it is evidence of the absence of God. In short, it is easy to have hope when you have good things in your life. But when all you no one is pain, hope is damn near impossible. I absolutely love this song. David was an amazing writer. His authenticity and honesty is fucking heart wrenching.

I dare say that someone will very rarely find a song of such monumental beauty. being the perfect combination of lyrics and music, this one became instantly one of my all-time faves. ... sadly only some days after David´s passing. saying "thank you" does not quite express what I want to say, yet it is all I have. I also don't think that the writer was just talking about material possessions. Perhaps they were talking about family unity, personal confidence, etc... who knows?? However, at the end of the song, they talk about men from the west. I take that as from California or Hollywood, maybe people who were born into fame or money who can buy their way out of problems, etc...

That's the one line in the song that I have never really came up with what he means. I agree with Miguel that I don't think he is referring to Hollywood because like he said, they are Canadian. But I really don't know what he is referring to. Western Civilization is as good of a guess as any though.
