If this is legal, then Olajuwon should be able to score more than 50 points per game.

Hello, nice video. I was searching for confirmation that pivot foot may be lifted when pivoting but may not be returned to the floor, I see this move a lots of time but the official rules book says something different. It says that the player may JUMP OFF his pivot foot. Correct me if I'm wrong but LIFTING and JUMPING OFF is not the same thing. As you posted this video I hoped that you could have an answer to this question.

Sloba Ivkovic Lifting and jumping off is different, jumping off involves landing but lifting doesn't inolves landing. "Landing with both feet, then take one step"and "land with one foot then jump with that foot and then land with both feet simultaneously" is the same.

Please do not remove this video as it is a great example for NFHS (North American High School Rules) Traveling. I use this video for training as it clearly explains the travel rules for North American High Schools. If you must, just change the name.

To pass or shoot for a goal ,the player may jump off a pivot foot, but neither foot may be returned to the court before the ball is released from the hands. So example in the video is infact a travel.

@@skofleknot hard to do some self reflection, particularly when your opinion conflicts with a person who sits on FIBA’s rules committee and acts as the head of officiating for league play. Maybe start with the fact the player didn’t “jump off his pivot” and then go from there.

@@moejoeryzen2983 I am just saying what is written in the official FIBA rules. Pivot foot must be in contact with the court, you can only lift pivot foot (at the end of dribble) when you jump with it and release the ball before you hit the ground. I do not know what was written in the rules when this video was made, but that is what is written in the official rules now.

You’ve taken a statement that says “if you jump off your pivot foot” and interpreted that to mean that a players pivot “must be in contact with the court” all the time. Completely ignoring the fact that the rules also state that “a player may lift their pivot foot”. You’ve also taken the words “jump off a pivot foot” and interpreted it to mean the player can’t step with his non-pivot, lifting the pivot off the court. In reality the pivot rules allow the non-pivot foot to step. And the travel rules allow the player to lift their pivot foot with that step. It is done on every basic two-step layup.

Definitely not useless. There is no new rule video where all traveling rules are addressed. There's only a video where the rule changes are explained. Many rules on this video still apply.

It should not be legal IMO. The player has switched his pivot foot. It would have been legal if he jumped off both feet simultaneously. FIBA rules 25.2.2: "To pass or shoot for a field goal, the player may jump off a pivot foot, but neither foot may be returned to the floor before the ball is released from the hand(s)."

As long as the ball is released before the pivot foot hits the floor is legal. Imagine a jump shot inside the paint. A center may fake and make one step to avoid the defender and as long as he jumps it is fine.
@johnsurs22

Elgriego In that case neither foot touches the ground until after the ball is released. In this case, he's switching his pivot foot before jumping
@Tillipillihousu

@@johnsurs22 "The player has switched his pivot foot." That's not how it works. The pivot foot is still the same, but it has left the floor, and as the rule you cited states, may not be returned to the floor before the ball is released from the hand(s). This may be the most misunderstood rule in basketball, there are even pro players who don't know this is legal. But it has been this way for ages. This is also the same logic that makes lay-ups legal.
