Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) is the first integrated Public Sector steel plant of India under the aegis of SAIL. Ispat General Hospital (IGH) was established in the year 1959 to cater to the health needs of employees working in the Rourkela Steel Plant and their dependants. Presently it serves 15,383 RSP employees’ & 71,000 employees’ dependants and about 44,000 ex-employees. It also caters to the people residing in and around Rourkela city including the adjacent states of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh in the vicinity of around 100 kilometres. The present population of Rourkela is about 8 Lakhs. The average patient load in OPD is 6-7 Lakhs per year and the patient load in IPD is about 26,000 per year.
At present, Ispat General Hospital has bed strength of 600 with following facilities: i. General Medicine ii. General Surgery iii. Obstetrics and Gynaecology iv. Orthopaedics v. Ophthalmology vi. Otolaryngology vii. Paediatrics viii. Pulmonary Medicine ix. Psychiatry x. Dermatology xi. Pathology xii. Microbiology xiii. Biochemistry xiv. Nuclear Medicine xv. Dental xvi. Radiology In addition to above, Ispat General Hospital also provides consultancy in Neurosurgery, Burn and Plastic surgery, Gastroenterology. Ispat General Hospital has been the pioneer in the field of medical care as far as public sector is concerned. Intensive care was started way back in 1974 in IGH with 11 beds. Burn centre was started in the year 1978 with 11 beds. Dialysis facilities, pacemaker implant, total joint replacement, phacosurgery for cataract, laser therapy for retina, OCT are a few of the specialised services rendered by this hospital. The laboratory facility is also state of the art with complete automation. The Radiology department has 16 slice spiral CT, MRI, Ultrasound and C-arm facility with digital X-ray. IGH has been also a centre of excellence in the field of medical research in Malaria and Haemoglobinopathies. It has collaboration with centres in India like ICGEB, CCMB, CDRI, with grants from DBT. It is also collaborating with institutes abroad like NIH, New York and Mahidol University. There are more than 70 international publications to its credit. Since 2006, DNB courses were started in 10 departments, namely, Medicine,Family Medicine Surgery, Paediatrics , O&G, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Anaesthesiology, Pulmonary medicine, and Pathology. A Nursing Training Institute is also run by IGH having an intake of 40 students per year for the last 50 years. Several projects are underway as a CSR initiative of RSP to provide free of cost treatment facility to needy, economically weaker patients of peripheral areas, like SURABHI (for Gynaecological cases), SUSHRUTI (for Problems related to Ear), SNEHA (for Leprosy), SWAVALAMBAN (for Surgical cases), SUNAYANA (for Cataract cases), AKSHAY (for Tuberculosis).
