Caused from improper (loose) gear mesh. Steel is fine but you have to adjust it as close as possible and still have a (bit) of tic at the tightest spot. Yeah they do use plastic gears for a reason too, makes things quieter and a fail part that’s cheap and/or easy to replace. It’s like the question every noob asks that drives racers crazy, “how fast does it go?”. There’s reasons for everything, no your rustler won’t out perform your buddy’s touring car but yes it might be faster, all in it’s designed use. Use your vehicle for it’s purpose n have fun, replacing broken parts is part of the hobby, bending metal parts gets expensive, isolate the parts that are cheap n quick to replace by having metal parts on either/both sides. Like A arms as the sacrificial part or plastic spur gears so you aren’t repairing your gear diffs all the time.

Yeah good points all around. This is an older video but I did end up going back to plastic spurs and then _actually_ meshing them properly, and haven't had a problem since. At the time my thought was the gears would last longer "because metal". In reality they weren't lasting long because I wasn't meshing them properly. Live and learn!

Place a chewing gum wrapper between the pinion and spur teeth, while locking down the mesh adjustment. Then roll it out from between the gears.

Yoooo always make sure it is the same pitch!!!

Yeah, that was the issue. I was still starting out when I swapped out the spur for a metal one (and one with the wrong pitch).

The teeths of the spur gear are worn if you see closely, they don't have the perfect shape as they was before the worn. So this explain these tiny metal pieces that are stuck in the plastic cover. I think that the pinion and the spur gears should have the same exactly quality of metal, or else if one of the gears have lower quality metal will worn out easily.

You can tighten it down. Should be fine. I prefer plastic spur gears ⚙

Thanks for the reply, and I did get it work. Learned a lot since this video! And also went back to plastic after destroying this one..

You can tell you didnt mesh the gears correctly when you installed them. 100% operator error

Operator error indeed! Looking back I feel foolish for putting a steel spur in the first place, but especially meshing them this poorly! Learned a lot since then 🤣

What Tooth Spur Gear Is That?

Must been the small pinion less teeth with a 54t would make some like that a 8t

just my two cents….It looks like that spur gear is poor quality I was expecting your pinion gear to be chewed away but it's not it's your spur gear and that is unusual considering the pinion spins so many more times. Take the gear off don't buy any more would be my recommendation. Generally the plastic should be fine with a good mesh. Or get a better hardened steel and then find the right pinion gear that won't be shredded… Good luck thanks for showing us here
