Ill save everyone some time. Get the Traxxas Rally. Comes with the LCG chassis already, and the Rally is literally a lowered Slash. If you want you can always convert it to a Slash with a small part count. Get the metal shock caps immediately. Then you can start upgrading, when your bank account comes back from the ER. The Slash/Rally can take the upgraded diffs from the E Revo V2 that the Ultimate comes with. Its cheaper to get the Ultimate straight up with all the fruit, but if you're financially challenged, you can pick and choose what you want to upgrade over time, and some of the upgrades on the Ultimate you don't need straight away. And it allows you to cherry pick, what you are throwing your money at, and how often. Also GT shocks for a better handling Slash/Rally. Big bores for bashing. The Slayer is based on Revo platform.

It’s always interesting to see reviews of more mainstream stuff like this. There’s a reason they’re so popular… I recently bought an Associated SC10 Pro4. I raced it at the last RC Kicks meet, and it’s brilliant. I upgraded the servo, because that was terrible, but the truck was £289 from Modelsport, so about £320 including the fast servo. It’s a 3300kV brushless 550 motor and *very* quick. In a straight line it’s the same speed as my 10.5T XRay buggy! Similar to the brushless 4x4 Slash, but significantly cheaper and no proprietary battery tech to mess about with. The Slash does look better though - Traxxas are king when it comes to paint jobs.

However, it was the Traxxas Slash which brought me back to the hobby for good. We've had them for probably 8 years and they have been beaten unmerciful And has had very good luck and hardly have had any breakages And although I think Traxxas can be a douchey company they do make good stuff. The shocks on these I found to be great never an issue with them and work very smoothly. Our local club (not large) has 20 or so spec slashes at most races. So much fun. The ultimate is a truly nice RC. I’ve driven them and VXL with the LCG Chassis added and I’ll take the ultimate. Watching a bunch of stock brushed 2wd slashes race on largeish 1/8 scale dirt track is a HOOT!

It does feel like that I know, but if you take say a average Tamiya kit, £200, brushless motor and ESC £100, bearings £35, transmitter and receiver £50, servo, £35, paint, £10, you end up with £430 before you add any upgrades. You can easy get a Slash for that and not an entry level one. Granted it might not look as scale or detailed but you can beat on it with way less issues. Now yes, this is comparing apples and oranges really but personally it’s more down to our psychological dynamic. Stumping up one big lump of cash, always feels way more painful than loads of smaller purchases. Add that dynamic to you being able to purchase more smaller items independently, you get the fun feeling of purchasing more new things and that feels not only less expensive, but way more fun. Well, it feels that way to me when I look back on my Racing Cougar and what I have dumped into that buggy. So taking just the figures into account, RTR kits are basically the same. The only caveat to that would be if you purchase the RTR and instantly start swapping out parts and upgrading it. Then you are removing new parts that you paid for and spending even more replacing them. Then a roller or kit is a better way to go for sure. What do you all think, totality wrong observation or…?

glad to see this one.. the slash is probably the rc10 of modern times. our club races the spec slash it would be the cheapest one you have there 12t titan and all.. only allowed to use your radio, traxxas metal shock caps, rpm rear carries and the rpm camber blocks up front. all the upgrades are only for longevity, last year we had over 30 at our slash event, and at regular club events we have a solid showing. the point of running them is it is a very affordable way to get people involved in the club level racing on a very simple platform. now with that being said, we as club racers using what we get in the box due a few things to make them preform better. if you run through the comments you will see that the slash is just a base platform, even some of the parts from the bandit fit it, Traxxas has most of its entry level stuff able to swap parts, that makes it nice when the shop carries basically all the parts so repairs dont require an order and waiting time.
