Treating hoof rot in sheep and goats. In this video, Tim shows us how to treat hoof rot in sheep and goats effectively with antibiotics, zinc sulfate, and copper sulfate.
If you don’t have an established relationship with a veterinarian, it’s not too late! Always talk to your vet; they are an indispensable part of any farming operation. I am not a veterinarian. Please contact your veterinarian for any and all medical advise and treatment regarding your livestock.
The antibiotics we use in this video are available from your veterinarian. We are using Draxxin (100mg) at a rate of 1ml per 40kg body weight or about 1ml per 80 lbs of body weight. In the event you do not have Draxxin available or it is cost prohibitive, your veterinarian may advise the use of Nuflor (300mg) at a rate of 6ml subq repeated every 48 hours or LA200 at a rate of 5ml subq repeated every 48 hours as well. For the record, I have never used Nuflor or LA200 for hoof rot.
The zinc oxide we use in the video is Dr. Naylor’s Hoof and Heel which is available at most big box stores such as TSC or Rural King. The copper sulfate is available on Amazon. Copper sulfate may also be available from big box stores but will be in the pond maintenance section. Do not let sheep ingest copper of any kind at any time. Sheep and copper = death in most cases (there are few exceptions).
