So your dairy cow just gave birth, but now she seems dull and out of sorts? It's probably MILK FEVER! Being unable to metabolize enough calcium out of her bones can QUICKLY become a life-threatening situation. However, if you have a few things on-hand during calving, you can take care of this condition at home. Don't ignore the symptoms - milk fever goes hand-in-hand with ketosis and metritis!! Believe it or not, all 3 are primarily metabolic failures; not so much bacterial, viral, or environmental issues! If you can fix milk fever, often the other 2 will fall into place as well! If you miss the signs, your cow runs the risk of retained placenta, displaced abomasum, decrease food intake which turns into decreased milk production, uterine infection, coma, and possibly death.

My husband and I have been farming for nearly 30 years; we've learned a LOT during that time! Despite the fact that I have a degree in Animal Science and my husband has a degree in Agricultural Science, we continue to step outside the box when it comes to animal husbandry. Our goals are to raise happy, healthy animals that can provide our family sustenance and, at times, profit. It's my pleasure to try to share some of that knowledge with you!
