Treating Pelvic Inflare and Outflare with Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques
The pelvis is a bony structure located at the base of the spine, formed by several bones including the ilium, ischium, and pubis. It plays a crucial role in supporting the weight of the upper body and facilitating movement of the lower limbs.
Pelvic inflare and outflare are terms used to describe different orientations of the pelvis.
Pelvic inflare refers to the anterior (forward) rotation of the pelvic bones, causing the front of the pelvis to widen. This movement increases the angle between the pubic bones and is often associated with an outward flare of the hips. Pelvic inflare can affect the alignment of the spine, hips, and lower limbs, and may influence factors such as gait (walking pattern) and posture.
On the other hand, pelvic outflare refers to the lateral (sideways) rotation of the pelvic bones, causing the sides of the pelvis to widen. This movement increases the distance between the right and left sides of the pelvis. Pelvic outflare can also affect posture and may contribute to imbalances in the lower body.
In this week’s video Erik Dalton demonstrates a massage therapy technique that massage therapists can use to address issues of pelvic inflare and outflare to improve the function of the SI joint (sacroiliac joint).
This massage technique is part of a systematic approach for treating postural dysfunction called Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques, an approach developed by Erik Dalton, PhD. Erik Dalton is widely regarded as one of the foremost innovators in the massage profession. He has studied with some of the profession's leading clinicians, like Ida Rolf and famed osteopath Phillip Greenman. He is the developer of Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques, a system of manual therapy that addresses and heals pain patterns at their very core.
