My brother almost did this. We had a double truck tree on our fence line that had the half leaning towards our property fall. The base was eaten up with rot and insects. The other half still standing was leaning over the fence towards the neighbors property. We needed to get it down before it fell and damaged something next door. So, we did what these guys did and my brother was in the 4X4 pickup waiting for me to signal him as I made the final cut. I made the final cut and the tree started moving towards the neighbor's place. I signaled my brother and HE WAS BACKING UP! He had his foot off the brake, letting the transmission in drive hold the rope tight. But, he wasn't looking and didn't see me signal him. My nephew and I started screaming at him and he looked up to see the truck going backwards and floored the gas pedal. Luckily the 4X4 got traction and pulled the tree back upright and pulled it over onto our side and then all the way down. Why do people NOT pay attention during critical times like that? It looks like the guy in the video decided WAY TOO LATE to drive forward! Was he on the phone or just not watching? Watched the video again and the guy driving was spinning his tires long before the tree started moving. He basically made himself a good slick spot to park that 2 wheel drive truck in and when it started to fall he couldn't pull it!

The tugging rope should NOT be tied to rear of vehicle. When pulling from rear, the rear axle wheels are lifted off the ground causing rear wheels to spin in mid air. Attach rope to front frame of towing vehicle and tow with transmission in REVERSE. This use the engine weight to keep all vehicle wheels on the ground. This allows rear drive wheels to remain in full ground traction at all times with transmission in reverse.

Leave your hold wood a bit heavy away from the building and wedge against the opposite side. To Fell a Tree is real good reading for the novice, they call it the fellers Bible for a reason. PunkAss17331 Exactly! I used to do tree work and if I were that close to the top I certainly would have limbed the whole top while I was up there. Lazy tree work I see this all the time. Take 20 minutes and piece the thing down. Most people don't even have the sense to tie the thing off but what good is it if your not putting massive amounts of constant tension on the line going in the exact opposite direction not off to the side.

A few points: make sure your four wheel drive works. leave pavement tires on the pavement. you should have 2 guide ropes if you are that insecure that you need any. and why isn't he pulling it into the woods? it looks pretty clear from this angle.

Basic tree cutting,make a low notch on the side where you want the tree to fall. Second cut a notch opposite side of the tree . Then you make a cut from the top notch to the bottom as you get closer the tree comes down in the direction of the bottom notch.

If the rope was higher they would've had much more leverage. Or used a 2 to one system with a couple pulleys and gotten twice the pulling force. Either these guys are beginning or just lazy. I'm glad nobody got hurt. The house or garage can be replaced but you can't replace a life. Be careful when dropping trees. If your not sure about what you're doing then call the pros.

If you use a strap that stretches it will spring it back toward toward the direction you wanted to go … BuT for a solid fixed rope or chain there’s not enough spring ( preload ) to pull it with To get it to start the fall in the right direction !!! …. Not to mention the natural curvature of the tree was in the wrong direction ( Meaning that’s where all the weight was going to fall towards , on top of that the wind direction matters too !! )

When you’ve cut your back cut as far as you’re supposed to and the tree hasn’t come over, cutting more will make this happen. They should have used a big come-a-long or got another truck to put more pull on the tree. Their rope could have also been higher for more leverage.

Face notch, bore cut, build hinge, take slack out of line, cut back strap and over it goes. You don't need 2 trucks you only need enough tension to nudge it in the right direction. Pulling harder on a tree that doesn't want to come over can cause the tree to barber chair.

If you look closely, you’ll see the truck’s rear tire spinning. He’s on grass and not getting enough traction with his rear end lifted up by the rope. The rope should have been longer or he should have pulled in reverse or had a 4WD.

These are the kinds of people who dont take precautions seriously.. You know the type,, they are normally pretty easy to spot without eyebrows and can only count to 3 on one hand due to missing fingers... If you are not trained in the proper techniques of felling trees, do yourself a favor and hire someone who is.. It could save your life.. Not only is there safety issues from the chainsaw itself like kickbacks to be concerned with, but not knowing how to fell a tree properly especially a back leaner,, could result in barber-chairing or the hinge failing to hold through the fell sending the stump back at you,, or many number of things that can kill a person.. The guy next to the truck is lucky the tree didnt whip that truck like a toy or nap the rope and come back at him... This is clearly a hold my beer moment..

I once had a huge tree only a few feet away from my home. Lightning killed it. Even though I have experience with a chain saw I bit the bullet and hired a professional to take it down. Why ??? because my insurance company told me if I cut it and it fell on my house they would not cover it. They told me they'd cover only if a licensed professional cut it down. I'd bet the lady in the video who said "Oh my God" said the same thing again when they found out their insurance would not cover it.
@dannyixoye262

+thundercloud47 About your insurance that said they wouldn't cover and accident of the tree falling on your home...they told you that only because they knew if a professional company did the work, they would have their own insurance to cover the mishap. Thus, your insurance wouldn't be out any money..however, if you thought you hired a professional and it ended up they did not have insurance, who would pay then. You should really dissect your policy to fully understand what is or isn't. Don't rely on the agent. Their job is to say their company money....
