This is brilliant . I bought some land in a less then desirable place (beautiful to me)10 years ago , it’s become very popular recently with a lot of logging and clearing for tract homes , I have had developers wanting to buy my land , I have refused even though I could be financially much better off - I’ll only be better off in this life and not my children and their children (hopefully) . I recently planted hundreds of native species trees and as the old saying goes I may not sit in their shade but someone will one day . I’m putting the land in trust never to be sold and hopefully my family can enjoy what I have and one day point at a massive tree and tell their kids that their gggg grandad planted that one a long time ago .

Great video! Nice to finally see an updated version with modern photography. The tree planting week I went on years ago was wonderful, and I'll always think of Trees for Life with fondness. Just one small note: It might be worth tweaking the audio and re-uploading -- the narration is only coming through the left channel. You could still leave this up, and just upload a second version for future links, changing this one to "unlisted" so that the email still works.

Wonderful to see a tiny portion of the devastated natural forests being returned. But also very sad that people have become used to seeing the barren hills of Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England...as if it's normal. And also that the whole of UK and most of Europe has wiped out it's native mammal predators, yet they ignore this fact in their blinkered goal of only trying to save predators in distant countries.

It is great to love forest. But if you do not reintroduce predators, you will never ever make a difference. Reintroducing wolves is necessary but it is a lenghty process and as everywhere else locals will fight against so that it will take generations. In the meantime you can make a difference with hunting. Allow cheap recreative hunting with bow only, and for backpackers and trekking lovers. You ll attract true wild life lovers, get minimal damage to nature and get back your forest in twenty years without any plastic protection and expensive planting. The only difficulty is to confront people and politics because hunting remains a privilege that has nothing to do with ecology anylonger but with money and prestige.

Many people hypothesize that the Caledonian forest actually took up only 15-20% of the Highlands, and the rest of the trees were in the lowlands. I believe that, for a multitude of reasons. However, I encourage you to continue restoring what was lost. Plant trees everywhere with no interuption, and they will go back to its natural habitat.

Just imagine, your off on a walk on the middle of the highlands. Nothing around but pure wilderness and forests, off in the distance, you hear the echoing howl of a wolf, look to your left and see the ghost of the woodlands - the lynx. Then you look over to the right and see a weasle chasing a red squirrel. You walk a little further and you hear the bellow of a bear and the scream of an elk. This is what I wish could happen, this is what I hope for.

I'm actually amazed that the deer people don't want predators back - they'd love to hunt the predators even more than they'd love the deer. I suppose it must be the sheep farmers you're really up against.

@@jmack8767 All these people who want to re-introduce the predators should have to pay a monthly fee to re-imburse farmers and ranchers for ALL the losses that these animals incur. We need to make them put there money where there mouths are, AND make it where the sheep farmers are so well recompensed that they actually HOPE a wolf will kill one of their sheep.
@molecatcher3383

Scotland has so many deer that we would need thousands of predators to control them naturally. But Scotland is too small to have very large numbers of predators so there will always be a need for man to become involved in deer management. Sheep farmers could be financially incentivized by the government (they already get government subsidies) to remove the sheep from hill/mountain grazing down onto the lower pastures which could be protected from predators by high fences. Inevitably some sheep will still be lost but compensation can be paid. Some countries in continental Europe have already been through the process of re-introducing predators and making suitable arrangements with the sheep farmers, so I am sure that the same can be done in Scotland.
