Now thats the kind of video I've been looking for. Now I know for certain that I can positively ID a black cherry. I 'pretty much' knew before I watched this but when it comes to plants and trees etc. anything less than positive on an ID is just not knowing. He fluently covered all the things that I had questions about and answered them.

I had 2 or these pop up on the end of my driveway, one on each side. They are both equal distance from the street and equal distance from the edges of the driveway. You would think they were planted but they were not. They are about 20 feet tall now. Interesting bark as they age.

Good butterfly tree (Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, Red Spotted Purples on saplings, sometimes Spring Azures on flower buds). Susceptible to black knot fungus, though, which might be a problem if you have susceptible trees nearby (chokecherries though generally who cares?, and most European plums), since these are usually too tall for most people to prune out the infections, which can then spread spores to other plants

I had one of these growing up in my yard never knew what it was now it’s about 8ft tall. I used my plant identifier app and comes out to be a black cherry!

I have heard it called the potato chip tree. It is beautiful and useful to wildlife.

We live in Connecticut and have a tree in our back yard very similar to this but the differences are the leaves are more elongated with no rusty red hairs along the mid rib, and the berry clusters are denser. When scratched, the stems do have a bitter aroma. Another difference is the fruit ripens in late summer. The tree is approximately 60 feet tall. The bark is not quite as rough as this. Is what I described still a cherry tree, and is the fruit edible?

@Mister Drummings I live in Connecticut too and I found that the black cherries ripen in mid-late August. The bark gets scalier as the tree ages, so a younger tree would have smoother very bark similar to black birch. The leaves can vary in length and shape depending on growing conditions, sunlight etc. If it smelled bitter inside, most likely it was black cherry. Our native pin cherries smell kind of sweet.

for the longest i thought the wild cherry trees i had down here were wild black cherry, but after watching this i'm not certain. They look exactly like wild black cherry but the fruit ripens well before the fall. I watched your video on the Pin Cherry and their earlier ripening fruit, but mine definatly look like black cherries. Maybe they're just an adapted specimens or something.

Chokecherry bears fruit in the same structure, but the trees are shorter and the bark is different. P. serotina also has some regional subspecies, including an evergreen one domesticated in Mexico as a fruit tree (the capulin cherry).

I have a cherry tree that otherwise has identical looking fruit but it's ripening right now in July. Surprised to hear that they typically ripen in fall. The cherries are delicious when they're completely black. Anything short of that and they're bitter.

I think Don made a mistake concerning the ripening of the fruit. Ripens in late June/early July here in Southwestern NY.

I find the bark becomes less distinctive when the trees become very old. When trees are in their intermediate grow stage the bark is far darker and corn flake / scaly like.

Don, you made a mistake-I never thought I’d see it! I think you said the fruit ripens in the late fall. Actually, it ripens in late June/early July, at least here in the Southern-Tier of NY…

Wilted foliage not only potentially deadly to cattle but horses too. Don't know about other livestock like goats, etc. A horse owner may not know there's a problem until his animal is already dead.

Looks like it was from a a root burl. Burlwood is not everyone's cup of tea. But each is unique and striking.
