Bhagavan Sri Ramana had lived in these 2 caves for about 23 years from about 1899 to 1922. First in Virupaksha cave from 1899 to 1916 and in Skandasramam from 1916 to till 1922.
Virupaksha Guha is a small cave on the western slopes of Arunachala Hill behind the Arunachala Temple. Much before Bhagavan Ramana had made this cave his place of residence, a Shivite Saint named Virupakshi Deva lived in that cave. The story goes that when Virupakshi Deva attained Mahasamadhi there, an argument broke out between his disciples as to where the body should be interned-on the Hill itself or down below. The Hill being the Linga Swarupa ( manifestation) of Lord Siva himself, the custom is not to do any burials on the Hill. When the devotees returned the next morning, to their utter disbelief, they found the body of Virupakshi Deva turned into a pile of Holy ash (Vibhuti). This is the mound of Vibhuti which is worshiped till today inside that cave. Bhagavan lived in this cave for 15 years and is the place where he became known to the world slowly. Kavyakanta Ganapati Muni, the great Sanskrit scholar and 'tapaswin' had first met Bhagavan here and after a silent Upadesa from Bhagavan, bestowed the name of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. This is the place where Bhagavan had composed 'Aksharamanamalai' , The Marital Garland of Letters, for his desciples to sing while going for alms in the town everyday. He had jocularly said once, that Aksharamanamalai had fed them for a number of years.
Skandasramam is a small place built around a cave, a little above Virupaksha cave. The difficult shrubby terrain around the cave was single handed cleared and flattened with a Herculian effort, to build the Ashram by a disciple of Bhagavan called Kandasami. Hence the name Skandasramam. Skandasramam became a regular place where devotees flocked to see Bhagavan. His mother Alagammal had left her native place and joined Bhagavan here. In a small temporary shed she started cooking frugal meals for the inmates of the small Ashram and a few devotees.
In 1922, Mother Alagammal was guided to Moksha by Bhagavan Ramana, in her final moments on earth, by placing His hands on her Heart. She was buried at the foothills and a little time later Bhagavan too left Skandasramam to live in a hut next to His mother's Samadhi (The Origins of the present Sri Ramanasramam).
A boulder path was roughly strewn together for Bhagavan to go to Skandasramam now and then. This path has been improved over a period, but is still rough terrain.
The Hill which was mostly barren and rocky with few trees during Bhagavan's period, is today very green with an ecosystem of trees, thanks to the efforts of a few NGOs and the Government as well.
The two caves are today visited by devotees of Bhagavan to meditate and enjoy the trek through the greenery.
I hope this video may create that meditation in the hearts of the viewers.
Guhai Namassivayar temple is at a lower distance from Virupaksha cave, where the Samadhi and a temple of an ancient saint in that name is located.
