I have the exact same bike I bought it new from a bike shop in 1998

Just curious, there are two bolt holes on the drive side chainstay, underneath the bike. I assumed kickstand but they are on the drive side so that doesn’t really make sense. But I couldn’t find a bashgaurd or anything really that seemed to go with the threaded holes. Thoughts?

Looking at buying a 97 vintage. Any suggestions for upgrades and approximate prices?

you'll get the most bang for your buck with good tires and a new fork. these were one of the best tires in that era: amzn.to/3vqkWoa lightweight and flexible for cross country, which is what your bike was designed for. Or get the conti trail king 26x2.2 .heavy duty, more robust, and more volume for enduro, all mountain, light down hill amzn.to/2Xs9gES . regarding forks both are significantly better than what came on your bike. the TK 30 is a great, noticeable upgrade : amzn.to/3pkdolJ or the recon amzn.to/3piJZbH which is significantly better then the TK. it's lighter, stiffer (wider stanchions 30mm vs 32mm). on the cheap or for instant gratification, you can get modern style pedals like these: amzn.to/3G5JlEn and modern grips: amzn.to/3jkhRBn let me know if you have other questions or want to upgrade other parts.

Hey... I appreciate the video and comments.. I have come across one of the bikes you have in the video. What would you suggest would be a decent, affordable rear shock upgrade for this model? Size and type?

that's a good question. I'm not sure modern shocks are made with these dimensions any more, I recently came across a guy trying to replace a coil rear shock on a cannondale V bike from that era and he said the spacing for the mounts is thinner than anything currently available on the market. you'll need to get a caliper and measure it first: amzn.to/3kABiWf it's also good to just have one at home if you don't have one yet. I think modern shocks can fit as far as the length (front to back) but the mount width (where the eyelets are) is different than modern ones. please update this thread if you have the dimensions I'm sure it will benefit other owners in the future. I definitely want to know. once you have the dimensions I can find (and link) a suitable replacement. if the dimensions work, new shocks are definitely worth replacing, there have been tremendous advances in technology in that field that contribute to a much more efficient (less wasted energy) and comfortable ride.
