I was in love with this ship from the beginning. I still remembering the efforts to try and find out what the ship would look like from the fake one suggesting it would be a Galaxy Dreadnought to the 3 early 3d rendering versions which were based on a spy photo taken on set of a schematic. I still wasn't prepared for the full shot of the ship when the actual trailer was released, wow. While in many ways it's the antithesis of what a Starfleet ship is really meant to be, purpose built for battle loaded with visible weapons, it really fits the overall story arc started with DS9 and continued throughout of a culture of peace living in a time of war. It might not have been the ship the Federation wanted, but it was the ship they needed.

The Memory Alpha wiki established that the left-hand seat in a command center of a Galaxy-class starship was "typically[occupied]by the ship's councilor or chief medical officer," while additional seating was provided on each side of the secondary command chairs for VIPs and invited guests or as needed. This basic design template carried over to the Sovereign-class with the elimination of the additional guest seating. Part of the job of the ship's counselor was to provide the ship's captain with advice and information as needed to ensure that diplomatic situations,particularly first contact, proceeded smoothly so it stands to reason that the ship's counselor would be provided with his/her own seating and console to make things easier for that officer. Certainly McCoy would have taken advantage of that seat if it meant staying close to Kirk's ear. memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Galaxy_class#Main_bridge

+11:30 I would hazard a guess that the 3rd chair is designed to not even be used a lot of the time - except when Troi is there. But I can see certain situations where a visiting admiral or specialist might sit there. Also perhaps it makes sense for them to be used during "off-shifts" using them for training purposes. Other ships could also have that other console used for other purposes like Communications, fleet operations,, logistic management, direct transporter control, shuttle ops observation or away mission observation. Likewise The engineer or CMO could use that seat too.

I'm glad you noticed the Excelsior-Sovereign Continuity. Stewart, I never agreed with you on the Ambassador Class being a battleship. The Excelsior was designed at the height of the Klingon War, before the Khitomer Accords. The Ambassador was a peacetime expansion of the Excelsior, bigger, wider, more efficient. The Galaxy was an Evolution of that, the Ideal of Starfleet. The Cardassians were never more than an annoyance, like Iraq to the USA. The Sovereign was a response to the real threat of the Borg and Dominion. It's a lovely craft, but not a ship of Peace.
@saquist
7 жыл бұрын
There was never a klingon war. It was supposed to depict a cold war as which was with the Soviet Union. The only war that existed was for a day untill the Organians stepped in. Ambassador was the FIRST Star Fleet Vessel designed to service and defend the Federation Border and the Outlying Colonies. (the same purpose as the Galaxy) As the Federation expanded exponentially the Border Worlds need ships that would create new colonies and defend them and that is exactly what you see in the first few season of TNG. (In reality the gap between excelsior and Ambassador it FAR too short according to the registry of the series which jump some 7,000 NCC's in just 10-15 years suggesting strong that Star Fleet grew tremendously after the Tombed Incident in 2311.)

Maybe advancements in technology allowed the size to be reduced while at the same time increasing output. The Galaxy class for example is massively oversized internally and externally (it goes quite deep into the ship, as does the constitution class). The Enterprise B also had a small deflector dish, actually much smaller than the E in scale as it is much smaller than the original Excelsior. Of course the B was also designed by John Eaves so..

The bit about the bridge secondary seats. Consider that the Enterprise has always been the Federation Flagship, and that the Sovereign likely also serves as a flagship in fleet operations (not the mod) Given that, you would need, in addition to the normal ship command staff, a Fleet Admiral, (presumably) your Ground Forces/Marine commander, at least one or two Fleet Communications officers, a Fleet Tactical officer, and likely a Fleet Operations/Data officer.
@NovaScotiaNewfie

Looking at the bridge from the plot design perspective, Troi is on the bridge on the E-D and E-E because she helped Picard with first contact or difficult situations due to her empathic ability. That is why she as a councilor holds a station on the bridge. Why the bridge had 3 chairs in the command area could be for mission specialists or if flag officers had to go on a mission. It could be standard layout for Galaxy classes. But I would think the bridge came that way from Starfleet Enginering and you would think you need a specific reason for refits to be done. It could be Picard wanted her to have her on station. I doubt Captains can request a refit for such a reason and outside of damage to a ship they are scheduled and standard for all ships of any given class and determeined by Starfleet Engineering on what is needed to be updated/changed. The truth is since we never got to see another Galaxy class bridge (we never saw anything more than the Captain and tactical station on the Yamato and the Odyssey couldn’t use the E-D bridge set as they working on Generations and the made a small set to be used on DS9. The Challenger in Voyager just showed Geordi in the ready room or conference lounge) in great detail we have no idea unless the writers/producers/special effects staff give us a reason.

A good reason for having a third chair is if one chair is the Capt and the 2nd is the XO (#2) and the 3rd chair is for the Officer of the deck. Star Trek never showed this properly but on Real ships there is an Officer of the Deck who is in over all charge of the Watch Section. His station would be on the Bridge and he would act with the authority of the Captain during his watch. Anytime the Captain or XO were on the Bridge the Officer of the Deck would turn over the Bridge to them but retake it once they had departed. The 3rd chair could also be there in case a Ranking officer was on board and be available any Senior officer on board like the consular when a Ranking officer was not present. I think Troy was there simply because she had nothing else to do. .... Oh and it can not be a Flag ship with out and Admiral or Commodore on board.

My issue is in Nemesis they completely made the quantum torpedos worthless. The weapons use zero point energy. They are supposed to be devastating. They show them mainly using old photons and not even having an aft quantum launcher. Why wouldn’t you have your best weapon facing in both directions? Maybe because on screen they didn’t do anything more than a regular photon. Also if the ship had saucer separation how did it work well when there were no impulse engines on the secondary hull.

The Enterprise D seats were obviously "Jump Seats" and temporary. Councillor Troi was never command rated, I suspect it is more of a individual ship thing that Geordi added on to the bridge modules rather than federation standard. That space in front of the console is needed for hologram and enough space to focus on the screen. Front row seats in a silver screen theater are not the best ones.

Hence a personal conveyance with a higher level of non essential opulence. What's never made ANY sense to me was the idea that this required that vessel be externally docked in a recessed opening that was the Opposite the bridge and the equatorial plane of the primary hull. What makes MORE sense to me is that the captains Yacht simply be a shuttle with more accommodations than standard and PERHAPS have a specialized ceremonial shuttlebay somewhere in the upper decks. Perhaps aft of the bridge no more than three decks below it. On both the E and the D and many other vessels that always made more sense to me, ESPECIALLY in vessel assigned as Flag ships for the Admiralty even if they were from a presumably outdated Class (during TNG I would grind my teeth every time a Three pip Admiral showed up in a Excelsior class and the only thing that keep me from throwing a foam brick at the TV is the thought that these vessels were really loving restored Luxury vessels with an advanced communication suite and were escorted by smaller tactical ships

so a captain's yacht is to culturally show off by Human standards. Other alien races might be having different cultural standards. So the whole yacht concept might not give a similar impression... Makes sense why Picard never used it on the D
@MrSheckstr
7 жыл бұрын
robinvan1983 well , Picard never used it on the D because Paramount didn't want to spend the money creating either the set needed to show the interior or making filming models to show the exterior. That's why whenever the showed the captain riding in a secondary craft it was always a simple shuttle with the one time exception where he , data, laforge and troi were riding in a modified runabout with a Aft dining cabin. That last part makes more sense to me for a captains yacht than anything else. The idea of having the CY be externally mounted into is custom fit socket actually hardens all the way back to Jules Vernes 20,000 Leagues under the sea where the Nautilus had a specialized boat that fit into a slot of the hull and could actually boarded and launched while underwater And command the submarine to surface and retrieve them via a floating telegraph cable

Mork_of_Ork2001 I'm guessing more along the lines of it being reserved for mission or situation specific person. A diplomat, admiral, or specialist. Traditionally the "third chair" on surface naval vessel would be the chief of the boat, Officer of the Watch, etc. This is off topic but one of thing I REALLY liked about the refit Constellation class Riker Commanded in The Battle was the fact that the First Officer's Chair had the massive Galaxy Class Opps or Conn station that would have theoretically allow him to assume direct control of any of the three or fourth primary stations on the bridge (Opps, Conn, Tactical, Engineering) and receive updates from secondary departments throughout the ship Further off topic but it always made my teeth grind as to how few REGULAR bridge officers there were on Star Trek Shows. TOS movies 1,2and 6 and early TNG attempted to address that issue by switching Pavel to a tactical station and adding first a deltan and then a Vulcan to the crew and on TNG having Worf and OBrian man tactical and Conn in place of Yar and La Forge and with Data on permanent command of third shift. Unfortunately with Yar dying, La Forge getting Command of engineering and Miles hiding in the broom closest making Irish stew in the transporter buffer, and then ONLY ONCE showing Data in command of the overnight watch it really does beg the question of who is flying the ship during Poker Night???

Um, just FYI, structural integrity for maneuvering is still a big a design focus, even in space. You're forgetting about Inertia, which means that if the ship has "weak points", the sheer mass of the vessel's "modules" could still rip it apart in aggressive High-G maneuvering through effects such as torsion. You guys are pretty fun, but seem to withhold a lot on the technical and engineering (as in, IRL) aspects. It's nice going over the aesthetics, but isn't Star Trek kind'a trying for that some what, hard sci-fi feel? I understand it's not hard sci-fi, but the technical of sci-fi vessels to me seems more intriguing than the aesthetics.
@quoniam426
6 жыл бұрын
To have efficient propulsion you still have to consider center of mass and center of thrust (and center of lift if you are in an atmosphere), so having less structural weaknesses/less necks is a bonus. Plus the more compact the ship is, the more maneuverable it is, specially when turing on itself to turn around, for example.

I believe the model no longer exists. The saucer section of E ended up as part of the Borg debris on Enterprise.

Actually, the saucer depicted in the scene you're referring to was built for Star Trek Nemesis,used in the scene where the Enterprise collided with the Scimitar. The Enterprise-E model was purchased by a private collector and is currently displayed at the Seattle Sci-Fi Museum.
