10 season is about right as the series was progressing thanks to the direction of Manny Coto and no thanks to Berman and Braga as they are completely clueless of what Star Trek is and how to tell a good story! I never got the Akira-NX thing. When I saw the NX for the first time I said "ah, they chopped off the secondary hull cuz that'll be a thing that happens in the future. Cool." Criminally underrated design and I have always loved it. And it respects continuity a lot better than anything that happened since. I just wish they'd turned up the ambient light!

I have never seen such a comparison (in my eyes) between the Akira class and the NX. People say it's basically the Akira, but I just see a superficial similarity. Besides, in universe, why couldn't the designers of the Akira been enamored of the look of the NX? I agree with DD that the NX isn't visually 'technologically superior' to the Constitution.

I love it whenever Doug Drexler pitches the idea that the ships are grown. I'd like future Star Fleet design to have an organic hull that has a nice wood grain to it and they'd call it something like "hyperdense laminated organic hull plating" and give it some self-regenerative capabilities. That way you have something that not only looks distinctive and a bit alien, but also something fairly easy to comprehend the purpose and advantages of.

For the folks saying that the NX-O1 Enterprise look like a up side down Akira, that's a lazy criticism of the design. There enough differences in the design of the NX-01 that it is not a direct copy of the Akira, the profiles of both ships don't even properly match up. I am glad Doug Drexler clear that up and explain the common design of starships saucer sections. Some of you Star Trek fans nitpick to much and yeah I am a real Star Trek fan. Anyway, thanks Trekyards for another good episode, I enjoyed it.
@SlimDON1182

***** The hard points of both designs don't match up, so its not a upside down Akira. There are some similarities between the two designs, but they are small ones. That was just highlighted by some fans that just didn't like the show Enterprise. I am guessing you and other critics are designers, artists or know how draw things real good. Sense to your eye and there's , the NX 01 is a upside down Akira. Even though the hard points of both ships designs don't match up or line up in anyway. Cant be a direct copy if those points do not line up. When you have negative bias view on something you always see the negatives of it.

Am I the only Trekkie who thinks Enterprise would've been the PERFECT opportunity to not use a saucer? If it were up to me, either the ring ship, the Daedalus class, or Masao Okazaki's Yorktown class would've been used. Oh, and thank god they didn't use the Akira class! The fans would've bashed the show to no end, considered it non-canon, and I don't think it would've lasted half as long as it did! Now I'm wondering, if I were a concept artist, and production made such a stupid idea, would I still have to hold my tongue, or be for want of a job by the end of the day?

I never liked the idea that the NX Class was outdated barely a half a decade after launch. It was an experiment and sure there would be many new improvements, but being that this is 2151, I imagine by now humans would have learned to future-proof and think long-term with technology. So when Doug explains how it would eventually gain a secondary hull with a new engine for more power > Tim Taylor grunts here < it just makes perfect sense to me and proves that this was the original intention.
@gugeyewalker

I like Doug immensely but I do not like this version of enterprise - the Akira resemblence seems lazy - especially since this is a ship about 200 years before the Akira comes out. These are things that real fans do notice. However, the upgrade would've fixed that, a little.

Drexler's Arnold J. Rimmer salute is iconic. With a prequel series being developed that was pre-federation. I would envision a Enterprise that does not have the NCC emblem would look like. Not the needle through a wheel design as seen in the Motion Picture. The NX class was simple and real as the late 22nd century is still developing technology and this would how it be. I still thought that there should also be a navigation station as well as the integration was cheap! If Enterprise lasted 10 season the NX class would have the constitution design!

With the Trek universe of various empires as well as individual planets even, having their own basic look, i guess you can't stray off the path too far without drifting into another proprietary aesthetic.

I hate that they even made an Enterprise before NCC-1701. It was well established by the ship model case on TNG that there was no such ship, and I hate even more that they used a design that looks like a Dominion War-era ship. That, and the awful un-Trek-like opening song, felt like a betrayal. DD argues that TOS looks more advanced because the exterior is simpler, but if that's true, why did TNG and post-TNG designs have more complicated exteriors SIMILAR TO THE NX? It's completely inconsistent. White paint would have helped some, but it's also the geometry and detail.

I don't mind the NX similarities to the Akira, because I would assume that was a standard hull design. In the same way having a secondary hull with saucer is a standard design, and the same way having a quad (above and below) nacelle design is (relatively) common as a design function, I can imagine having a sleeker, smaller hull with an integrated engineering section being a pretty standard consideration when making a new ship. A more warship-like aesthetic, however I think canonically in Enterprise it was that way because warp technology was rather unadvanced, and it would improve warp performance with the weaker core and etc.

Spacesuits- the blistering rub that trek gives me on those. All that tech and they can't come up with a comfortable protective duty uniform that would give them time, if they went out a hull breach, to get picked up after a fight? EPS conduits, bridge crewmen with burns? a good duty suit would eliminate that. If it was wetsuit like it would preserve that pervy curviness that the 6 pack crowd likes....

9:45 Doug Drexler can call me dumb if he likes and maybe I'm tied for being one of the most asinine people he's ever met in his life, but having played Star Trek Armada 2 before watching Enterprise, it was quite a long time before I realized the Akira class and the NX class were supposed to be two different ship types. Complete newbies to Star Trek maybe didn't notice it in First Contact or play the video games, and people totally immersed in Star Trek can probably tell a hundred differences between the two ships, but to the casual fan like me it's a bit too similar to the point it's confusing. That all being said, his ship designs are great, and creativity is definitely something his body of work has in abundance. Great series guys!

Ok I heard that Rick Berman was getting pressure from the people at Hallmark to make the exterior of the NX-01 Enterprise metallic. This was to match the Hallmark special edition " Pewter NX-01 " which was already in production. Any idea when they went with NX-01 as USS Enterprise registry number? In the USAF NX is used only on experimental model of aircraft. Never used on production models. Thanks Captain, Commander and Doug Drexler.

A case for NCC-400: I've seen the designation NX used for the ENTERPRISE when she became a ship of the line. However "NX" is used for Naval eXperimental, whereas NCC under Starfleet is used for Naval Construction Contract. Example: NCC-1701 indicates the that Enterprise was the 17th series 1st vessel of the line where as the USS Constitution and USS Excelsior (NCC-1700 - NCC - 2000 respectively) are lead ships in their classes. I submit that when the Enterprise under the command of Johnathan Archer, her registration should have been NX-400 and subsequently NCC-400. Being as Zefram Cochrane's PHOENIX would be designated as NX-100 in honor of his achievement. During the series run of ENTERPRISE I notices at least two other Starfleet vessels prior to the Enterprise (NCC -2xx and NCC 3xx?). I will welcome any discussions regarding this subject.

SEASON 5 SYNOPSIS- Enterprise gets it's first scheduled refit. Speed increase cruise speed warp 5.5, maximum safe cruise warp 5.8, maximum emergency warp 6.2 for 4 hours. Secondary engineering hull section added. 10 more crew quarters, 2 more upgraded shuttles, second transporter, 2 upgraded photon torpedo launchers and additional phase cannon added to engineering section. All phase cannon power increased by 25% and torpedo yield increased by 20%. Polarized hull plating increased by 20%, no force fields until last episode season 5 which is a two parter to season 6. The Romulan conflict heats up in these two episodes. Hoshi becomes telepathic and completely gets over her fear of transporters. Trip comes back to Entrprise. T'pol is replaced by a male Vulcan starfleet officer who actually likes humans. The computer system gets a voice. Dr. Phlox is Dr. Phlox, he starts going on more away missions though. The Enterprise monitors become flush with the walls and we see some of them with early LCARS. The aliens from, "Fight or Flight" return and the crew finds out they are the Breen(the ship from Fight or Flight looks Breen). There's more but you get the idea.

Although there’s the Akira class, almost an upside down NX-01, I wonder if Starfleet would ever make an updated NX-01 type ship for patrolling their space. No need for a Galaxy class ship inside their borders except for times of war, or massive evacuation. These small ships would be great with updated tech to maybe do recon since due to the size, or lack of size, they can be harder to detect than a Voyager, or larger Enterprise.

I think it should have been brighter. But I do like the basic design and I like the little touches he made to it to make it look more like the original series Enterprise. And I would have loved to have seen that secondary hull. If it had that on from the start, my only complaint would have been about the dark color of the ship.

When I watched Enterprise for the first time and saw the NX, I didn't recognize the Akira at all in it, because I just hadn't seen the Akira on screen by then. So my first impression of the NX was as a completly unknown, new ship design and I must say, I always thought it fitted pretty well with the whole idea about this era. Of course, nowadys I absolutly agree that the NX can be seen just as a rip-off of the Akira class, but actually, I don't really care. There are many real life examples of designs and Ideas that look similar. Of course, most other similar looking ships in ST are made in the same era but afterall, I think: why SHOULD I always look at the NX as a akira rip-off? It doesn't help anybody, it's like watching anything and looking for mistakes in story and effects. why the fuck do I watch a movie or series? Because I want to have fun. I don't look for things that bother me. So if the NX is just a flipped Akira, then just don't flip it in your mond. See it as it's own thing. I can understand why people don't like the whole timetravelstory stuff in the ENT series and personally, I agree that it is not as good as other famous star trek series. But why should I compare them? I watchend Enterprise and I had a pretty damn good time doing so. That's all that counts for me.

My most beloved Enterprises: 1. D, because it's the first one I ever saw, and it's an awesome, huge, majestic, space luxury liner 2. E, because... well, dammit, it's so cool and fighty, but I was sad that it lost the smooth luxury liner elegance and sprawl 3. NX, because... I don't really know, It's on the third place mainly because how fragile and small it is, and this order is based on which I'd love to captain the most, and I love the idea of being in safety and luxury of D and having all its majesty under my fingertips, and kinda dislike the idea of being in that relatively small eggshell vulnerable NX, but at the same time, it feels much more personal and real, and resembles a submarine a bit, and having a submarine is one of my dreams on par with having an enterprise-style starship :-D

I do love the NX design, but here's the problem with Doug's "Federation starships all look similar" argument. The hero ships are usually groundbreaking designs. I'd say the Galaxy class, for example, was not only one of the all time great ship designs, if not the greatest; but the pinnacle of the entire "organic" design trend of the late eighties and early nineties. It's either the Galaxy class, or the first generation Miata (I favor the Galaxy class). The NX, on the other hand, is a very nicely proportioned and detailed example of things we've already seen before. Can anyone name an original design feature introduced by the NX that you found striking? Anyone? The NX is beautiful, but less of a creative leap than the Miranda class, which used the same warp engines and saucer as the Constitution refit but had that sweet rollbar with the torpedo launcher behind the bridge.

Phase cannons (instead of the strip phaser array), grappler, and hull polerization for example.
@XTINFILM

I'd consider those to be examples of writing rather than design. I'm not aware of any external feature associated with hull polarization, and the phase cannons and grapplers are retracted 99% of the time. Even when extended, they're barely visible in anything but a close shot of themselves. I wouldn't count tractor emitters as an integral design feature either. I can't tell you where they are on anything but the Galaxy class. Phaser strips on the other hand were a major design innovation.

I'm sorry but I have to respectfully disagree. I think that the NX Enterprise is a terrible design and I strongly believe that it looked more advance than Kirk's Enterprise. Take a look at cars from the 1930s-1950s. Now compare them to the more streamlined cars of today. The other cars had a lot of extra crap on them that serves no function while the newer cars are lighter, get more performance out of smaller engines than their older counterparts (assuming completely stock configuration), are more efficient, and so on. The NX is a rougher-looking ship while the Constitution is more sleek and elegant in design (ignoring the tech and budget restrictions TOS had).

I never realized how much of a jerk Drexler was. Yikes. Just fess up to copying and pasting the Akira model and be a man.

Agreed. I just found it a very weak excuse for an obvious shortcut (copy/paste job) of a design.

That is a handsome ship. Very sleek and unlike most of the other ships seen on screen. It has a nice 'our first try at making a starship' look that would have fit the era better. Chunk it up a bit to look more unrefined and it would have been a winner.

True. It was too dark and dirty looking to really be considered an in cannon ship. Then again, 99% of Enterprise went against cannon in a very sloppy way.

Agreed. They're actually giving a damn about the in-story universe and continuity. Something Paramount never cared about, especially with Berman.

Add to that, the producers of the next JJ Trek movie want to "dumb it down" and "make it more like Guardians of the Galaxy". Be afraid.

The interior sets were great, the ship design was LAZY.
