From watched so far, Alec Peters will take star trek to whole new level. his ability to use real life aspect to inform his style gives me confidence that his movie will be very well received. I have been reading the star trek novelizations and they have been a vast improvement for the star trek universe as the it writing first fans second. I feel that Alec Peters is taking Star Trek back to its character driven roots which was sourly missing in most of the TNG movies and the Enterprise series.

Totally. The makers of Axanar know exactly what they are doing and they are doing it right. It is ironic that CBS is basing their art on making money while Axanar is basing their art on what they love. On Star Trek the future is about people of earth focusing now on bettering themselves since they evolved past the need for money.

Originally in 60's Klingon D-7 what we now call the photon torpedo launcher in the D-7's boom was the deflector. The D-7 was equipped with Disruptors instead of photon torpedo's. Disruptors were seen firing in a few TOS episodes from emitters mounted on front of engine pods. There was a small phaser emtter mounted on underside of bridge "wings". I think it was Star Trek the Motion Picture where we first saw the "deflector" location used to fire photon torpedoes.

6:30 I always saw the centaur class as being born of the Dominion war, because it has the exact same saucer section and impulse engines of the excelsior class. In my mind, maybe Starfleet was bringing old mothballed excelsiors out of storage for the Dominion war, and they decided it would be less expensive/resource intensive to cannibalize and reverse engineer the older ships, rather than bring them into the fight knowing that they were behind

When thinking about War time production I would think Star Fleet would be operating sort of like the United States During WW2. All production Facilities would be geared toward production of the weapon needed to defend the Federation and push back the Klingon's. This would mean every ship yard (civilian and Star Fleet owned) would be building the ships needed while other production plants would be building the sub-assemblies for those ships. Singer the Sewing machine company for instance produced Colt .45 model 1911's and all the car companies helped build Tanks and Airplanes. I would expect the same thing to happen in the Federation during an all out war where the Federations survival was on the line.

I think that it's the Constitution dish that's the experimental one. You also have to keep in mind that there are ordinary hull protections that need to be on all the time because there's stuff moving at near the speed of light in many places. Let's call that, navigational protection, because you need that on just to navigate, in particular because you would need them to accelarte to relative velocities close to but under c just to move about a solar system. Now, in the evolution from NX 01 to NCC 17, you have a major change in cross-section. The cross section of the Areis, the Reliant, the Kingon and Romulan ships are very very line-like, if tot wedge-like with the point in the direction of thrust. So the navigation protections are sufficient to keep bad crud away (and bring hydrogen in) while the ship is moving at translight speeds. The Horizon (you have to keep those in mind), the Constitution the Galaxy etc. present either an angled square or triangle to the interstellar medium or simply a box (for the Horizon). Now, in Ent, the development of the War-5 engine leapfrogged the developemnt of the navigational protections so a dedicated forward subsystem was created for use when they're moving REALLY fast (an interstellar medium screen, or a deflector array) and I'm sure it helped when someone was shooting at the front part of the ship which is likely why the Ares has one. When the Horizon and Constitution comes about, they need a much more powerful dish because of the greater corssection. To get the engines enough hydrogen to work, they need to move them away from the dish because the dish would move all the hydrogen way, rather like having an outboard motor (as well as being a major radiation hazard in and of itself). There were other benefits. If you position a Constitution so the people your shooting at are below the saucer, you have a good deal or coverage with phasers, the delector dish can be used with just a little power to keep help engineering safe, the bridge is the second-furthest thing from the shooting, the necells are the absolute furthest things from the shooting. So a constitution wouldn't be as manuverable as an Ares, but enough to oreient the ship properly regarding attackers. It's beginning to sound like survivability was a design concern as it might be if the Federation was at first loosing the war.

I think of the Ares Class as Starfleet's Hammer. When you are building a TOS era ship you have to use the tools around at that time. And the Ares class makes a damn fine hammer. As for the deflector dish being blue, I think its an appropriate design and being recessed it is shielded from enemy fire on the sides. Could we have more discussion on the types of weapons the Andorians provided for the Ares? The Vulcans supplied the defense and life support system designs which I would also like to know more about. Great show, keep em coming.

The current accepted theory (So far as I know) on ships without visible deflectors is that they use a forward beam emitter as a deflector. If you consider what deflectors are supposed to do (Deflect nasty particles with a stream of different particles that constantly runs) it would make sense that a beam emitter could have a deflector setting. To me, it seems that smaller, cheaper ships, or all out war vessels (Or not very science-oriented vessels) would simply skimp out on deflector dishes all together due to their limited use for whatever purpose.

I am not one of those that would like to see Star Trek turned into a Star Wars knockoff ala the horrid Abrams/Kurtzman Drek. But I do think there would be a time for peace in Star Trek, and a time for war just as in real life. I always have wanted to see subjects like the Federation/Klingon War and the Earth/Romulan war fleshed out and explored onscreen. Axanar does this with the Klingon war and I very much enjoy that. I also have always wanted to see a TOS era Federation capital ship realized onscreen (as I know such ships would exist). Axanar does this very well technically and aesthetically with Ares, and the backdrop of the Klingon war creates a valid reason for such a ship to exist. Much like in the TNG era the Borg incursions and Dominion war create a valid reason why ships like Defiant and Prometheus would exist. In truth, if not before, surely after the Klingon war the Federation would realize that some such ships should always be at the ready, just in case.

I have a thought about the deflector, what if it has lower output which hampers the ships top speed at warp requiring some maneuvers for larger objects, limiting their range explaining why we didn't see any in the future but still able to patrol set areas effectively.

Have you guys thought about the evolution of Starfleet design, in this you look at the first ship NX-01 [before refit] flip it over enlarge it, you got the Ares class which starts a line of ships from it Ares, Miranda [all variants], Zion class [TNG], Nebula Class, Akira, to STO where it is now with the Luna Class which looks like an enlarged Ares class with bits of a Miranda and Nebula on it. If you play a science officer on Star Trek Online Tier 4 ship.

The Kelvin is/was fucking huge. I actually really like it. It would make total sense for ships to simply get bigger, and bigger, and bigger, and have extreme tendencies towards massive crew counts and exploration up until the Klingon war. After that, ships got smaller, more efficient, and more powerful. It really makes sense to me. It's like, nowadays we have cars that could virtually be considered compact which could be the standard supercar of the 1970s by a couple seconds at the drag strip. The Ares is a great design IMO, and I'd really change nothing. I especially love the torpedo launchers. I'd have appreciated a more smooth aesthetic like that over what the NX-01 was made to be.

+Diax1324 space is a premium the new ships make no logical sense it might seem nice but when space rooms are 30m high and they still need to duck nobody thought about safety or resources. more open area and larger ships create problems. Space is a very hostile environment like under water being able to repair leaks or breaches before they get bigger is very important and likely something very hard to do on these new ships. Plus why do people need to stand in the 1/3rd of usable space on the bridge and have lots of surrounding space they could just have wallpaper or viewers to outside, or another room with viewers to the bridge for guests.. etc etc.. even houses don't waste that much space most of the time.
@thribs

+Diax1324 Considering that it was supposed to be only the 23rd century, it didn't make much sense. They get bigger and bigger over time until the 31st century when they can start making them bigger on the inside than the outside.

Another issue is mass being moved by the engines i'm not sure if mass would effect an object in space but these ships seem to be built on the surface which would be a huge task lifting it into space. And same goes for into warp if mass comes into the equation then poof. It all comes down to being able to bring people weapons and resources into space or the ocean with the least material used. any extra space that you might have on a ship you'd want to put into people friendly space, having a bridge with open space around its UN-used edges or super high ceilings in areas nothing goes is wasted material, Our planet and our solar system has a limited amount of materials for which to make ships with, if starfleet want to make more than 3 ships they'll have to be smart.

And lets not forget the share of trained officers and personell Starfleet just has and can't change like they want to. When i.e. 25% of them are scientists or medical personell then it isn't something Starfleet could change at will.

I'm sure somebody has already mentioned this, but I don't feel like sifting through all the comments to try and find out. It makes sense that the Ares' registry is NCC-1650, given that it launched a year or two before the Constitution class, and the USS Constitution is often regarded as having the registry NCC-1700. However, the USS Farragut, a ship which Kirk previously served on, is often regarded as a Constitution-class starship with registry NCC-1647, which is lower than the Ares. And in the 40th anniversary remake of the original series, you see a bunch of Connies with relatively low registries, most notably USS Intrepid NCC-1631. How does one explain these discrepancies?
@AvengerII
9 жыл бұрын
Alexander Smith They can't... Back in the day they didn't give a damn about being consistent with hull registry numbers in TOS because they were busy producing a weekly series. If you want the short of it, that's it! When they were still establishing the background of Star Trek, the model makers and guys who had to make the overlays for the bridge displays with numbers of ships weren't told that ships had to be such and such numbers so that's why the hull numbers ranged all over place into the TOS movie era. The USS Grissom had a ridiculously low three-digit hull number but looked very modern in Star Trek III! *By contrast, TNG ships had ridiculously high hull numbers. By the time TNG ended in 2002, the hull numbers were getting close to 80,000... There's no way eighty-thousand ships were designed let alone built. The only reason I can think of for such high numbers was to distinguish the 24th Century from the 23rd Century. 23rd Century ships (built in 2200s) have FOUR serial numbers, 24th Century (built in the 2300s) have five serial hull numbers. And of course, hull numbers DO get assigned to ships that they never finish building or cancel contracts for in real life and they do advance over numbers for cancelled/scrapped/never built ships in real life, too. Star Trek fans -- sci fi and comic book fans in general -- cannot stand inconsistencies and get so caught up in retcons and all that other nice junk that they try to make every little thing -- including the dumb, unimportant stuff -- count! It's the same thing with Stardates. Stop trying to make sense of the way TOS handled stardates because there's no sense to it. They picked numbers out of thin air whether people want to accept that or not. Heck, the TV episodes weren't shown in the order they were shot! It made obvious sense for them to be shown in SOME order because of changes between the pilots and production episodes and developments with the characters but they just didn't bother to air the episodes as they were produced so the point about Stardates and time progression is moot. It's amazing to me that people bought Gene Roddenberry's explanation of Stardates when it was obvious he was making up things to appease the fans on the spot! Yes, it should be logical that the hull number registries go higher than 1700 for ALL production Constitution Class ships but the fact is a lot of the people who wrote and produced these episodes were not aware of the fact of a Starship Constitution or that it had been established! The Federation Ships were all called 'starships' until they established they had individual classes of ships just like the US Navy does in real life. Again, a lot of the people writing this stuff were not aware of real-life conventions. There's still some debate about whether they called these ships Constitution Class during the making of TOS in the 1960s or much later (during production of TNG). I'd say it's probably the latter... They didn't nail down the fact that the Refit Enterprise was STILL a Constitution Class Ship until Star Trek VI!!! [The best explanation I ever heard for WHY the Enterprise was designated NCC-1701 came straight from Matt Jefferies... He sounded more like a straight shooter to me than Roddenberry who liked to tell stories so I believe Jefferies when he said the number was so that the ship was identifiable from a distance AND representing that it was the first (production?) ship of the seventeenth class design. The "NCC" part came from the required markings for civilian aircraft plus he was playing a sly tribute to the Russians who had "CCP" stenciled on the sides of their rockets. It's a simple explanation that works without having to write a college dissertation about it unlike anything anybody else says!] They were still untangling a lot of what should have been resolved in Star Trek TOS during production of TNG and later. People got upset at the Okudas and others for establishing dates and nailing down names and registry numbers even though nobody in a production capacity had tried to establish a firm foundation for things. The fans got into such an uproar over that... There are a lot of people who do not understand the difference between 'canon' and 'fanon' and even the guys in charge of dates and facts (Okudas and others) had to back off from 'absolute certainty' about a few things because of the fanatics.

+Richard Warner I would hope that the nacelles are more "Modular" for "Ease" of replacing damaged nacelles, more so that than retractable (maybe? but to what end). It was stated that the Ares Class (is) was a Specific-Purpose Combat Built. " No, Loveboat" so nothing fancy just a Warship. Being of a military background myself, Specific-Purpose Combat Built 'Assault Crusier' ( Which is an elegant choice of named type by the way) to me would mean simple easy of contruction, operation, and Battle Damage Assement/Replacment. the weakest points on a star ship are the strut pylons for the warp nacelles. If damaged nacelles could simply be jettisoned, and new ones installed, without the need for major drydock operations, would put back in action quickly , another big advantage.I would love to know if this is the TRUE intent the designer/creator for the inlet slot in the secondary hull for the plyons.

Ruben Gonzales Simple answer: The people who designed the Ares Class thought the rounded nodes look neater than the 'rear grates' on the second pilot version of the Enterprise. I tend to agree... The fact that the model reflects certain Motion Picture influences should be a hint that they're NOT going to be completely bound by the 1960s design aesthetic. Even the guy who plays Capt Garth, who is a producer on the movie, said about as much. As much as I like the original Star Trek, there are certain aspects of it than can certainly be improved upon like the bridge and hallway sets looking a bit less plywoody. It's also kind of boring to do things EXACTLY the same way that somebody else even if the original blueprints are still there!
